Darn glad he's okay.
Hope the driver of the pickup show back up try and make things right.

Doubtful. If he was the responsible type he wouldn't be driving without insurance in the first place.

Before Maine passed mandatory insurance laws you were automatically considered at fault if you were in an uninsured accident.
When making it a requirement was discussed, there were many arguing against it because "poor people can't afford it." Then they also can't afford to replace my truck after they run into it.
I'm not big on government intervention, but that argument is exactly why we need it.

What if the insurance companies issued a card like a credit card that you had to scan to buy gas? Insurance cost for those of us that actually pay would in theory be lower.

/ Neighbor ran off road. #25
That does make sense in theory. However that was the same logic which I heard for years to support nationwide health insurance.

If you look above the worklight on the wrecker boom you can see the break in the tree line. The road takes a left turn there.

Uninsured motorist insurance is different in each state. Here is Michigan (which is generally said to have the worst coverage and highest cost insurance in the country) Uninsured Motorist is required. However, it only covers medical and third party property damage, not collision damage. If you get hit by an uninsured motorist and don't have collision insurance you are out of luck. Even if you do, you are out your deductible. That's why most of us carry collision even on older cars. With an estimated 20% or more of Michigan drivers being uninsured (and those being the worst, highest risk drivers), if you get hit it's about a 50-50 chance the other driver is uninsured.

I’m curious what you mean by uninsured motorist only covering medical and third party property damage.

You (the first party) buy insurance from the insurance company (the second party) to cover claims from others (the third party).

Ok, I see what you were intending to say but in insurance parlance the insured is always the first party. A um/uim claim for damage to the insureds vehicle caused by another vehicle is still a first party claim against the insurance company providing the um/uim coverage.

The way you stated it, in insurance speak, the third party would be the tortfeasor.

Not being a lawyer, I probably don't know the correct terms, but the "third party" protection I was referring to was property of people not actually involved in the accident. This could be a building or a parked vehicle.

So are you saying if your vehicle was hit by an uninsured motorist and some property damage or injury occurred to a bystander or building nearby, say from flying debris, that your uninsured motorist coverage would step in and pay for those damages or injuries?

It's Michigan. No-fault insurance. They aren't talking about car damage. They're talking about property damage. You run a stop sign, hit another car, then hit a house. You aren't responsible for repairs to the other person's car. Their insurance is. But you are responsible for repairs to the house (third party).

Yes.

And your car won't get repaired unless you also have collision insurance.

Whatever you do, do not suggest moving to Michigan's method of vehicle insurance (no fault). It is outrageous expensive. Which, as a 10 year old could figure out, drives even more people to not have it.

When we moved a couple vehicles to Michigan we thought it was a misunderstanding when we saw the difference in price.

Michigan legislation is being "worked" to try and fix it.

Making it even worse, part of the money you pay in goes to a 3rd party that manages it for medical payouts. This 3rd party has no auditing or oversight by the government.

But anywhere in Michigan, you are never more than 6 miles from an inland lake.... :)

When I was self employed my GL policy was a little under 300$/yr. Then I went to NY for a project; because it's a no fault state my insurer dropped me like a hot potato and my new policy was 1800$/year. I really don't know about various insurance types, it's something I've paid into all of my life like pi$$ing money down a rat hole.

You would see about a 4500% increase in fuel thefts, and corresponding insurance claims for the associated damages incurred.

Stealing gas in any amounts wouldn’t be that easy. Don’t leave 5 gallon cans laying around. I don’t because they still walk off.
