I have been thinking about the cameras myself. There is a wide range of prices. But have no idea which ones are any good. Anybody have preferences or recommendations?

Just curious. SC requires purchase of uninsured motorist insurance. Isn't it required in other states?

Steve
Various states have different laws, but here uninsured motorists insurance covers medical expenses only.
Thankfully there were no serious injuries.

We have front and rear cameras in our cars, Thinkware F750 (was the top model when we got them, there are higher models now and one that uploasds to cloud).
The image quality is excellent and shows all info.

This is why having two dash cameras are vital. One forways the other facing back . Check YouTube for driving adventures and scams that you otherwise would not believe .

You can’t get blood out of a rock.

We have two levels of insurance, third party fire and theft which covers the other vehicle but not yours unless stolen or a fire and fully comprehensive, we opt for the latter and the price difference is minimal (unless you are under 25).
The latter covers everything even if the other party are uninsured, if you are drunk or drug affected you are not covered.
I have been rear ended twice by uninsured drivers and there has not been any problems but the party at fault are pursued mercilessly by the insurer for the money.

Nope. In Indiana, for example:
(from the DMV here: Indiana Car Insurance - Quotes, Coverage & Requirements | DMV.ORG)

You are required to purchase uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance.... but you can opt out of it in writing, which, in effect, means you aren't required to purchase it.

[h=1]Car Insurance in Indiana[/h]
[h=2][/h]In Indiana, you must carry a certain amount of liability insurance in order to legally operate a vehicle. If you are found to be driving without having met this requirement, your driver's license can be immediately suspended.
Continue reading to learn more about Indiana insurance laws, coverage options, and discounts.
[h=2][/h][h=3]Liability Coverage[/h]Indiana requires all drivers to hold at least the following amounts of liability insurance coverage:

  • Bodily injury (per person): $25,000.
  • Bodily injury (per accident multiple people injured): $50,000.
  • Property damage (per accident): $25,000.
[h=3]Uninsured Motorist Coverage[/h]All liability insurance policies in Indiana must also include uninsured/underinsured motorist liability coverage.
The minimum limits for uninsured motorist coverage are equal to the minimum limits for liability coverage (see above).
The minimum limit for underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage is $50,000 (per accident).
Uninsured/underinsured motorist car insurance helps cover any costs incurred by an accident with another driver who has no liability coverage, or has coverage that is not robust enough to cover your costs.

NOTE
:
When you purchase your liability insurance, you can opt out of uninsured motorist coverage; however, you must do so in writing.

Uninsured motorist insurance is different in each state. Here is Michigan (which is generally said to have the worst coverage and highest cost insurance in the country) Uninsured Motorist is required. However, it only covers medical and third party property damage, not collision damage. If you get hit by an uninsured motorist and don't have collision insurance you are out of luck. Even if you do, you are out your deductible. That's why most of us carry collision even on older cars. With an estimated 20% or more of Michigan drivers being uninsured (and those being the worst, highest risk drivers), if you get hit it's about a 50-50 chance the other driver is uninsured.

They at least got the guys license plate number, right?

Even if that isn't going to help this situation, sure would be nice to have the police pull the fella over and cite him for no insurance.

Could have been much worse..... still OP, hoping your neighbour gets a thorough checkup. Concussion issues can be deceptive, and ongoing.

Should do it anyway, but if I was putting on the mega miles I used to, would definitely have good cams in the vehicle by now. A good part of that is just for self-defense, legally, IMO.

How courts work vs. how they should work.... whole thread right there. Simple example - late model Benz hits a pedestrian - it's considered routine in some geographies for the pedestrian to get sued for damage to the car.

In this twisted legal universe, I know that lawsuits have been launched (and won) by the people who caused the accident.

The # of uninsured motorists out there is staggering.... easy to see why police resources can be overwhelmed.
