I also had a Bush Hog dealer tell me all they used was grade 5 bolts for sheer pins. I went with it and never had a problem though I did break a couple. I would stay away from the grade 8 ,not as likely to break but you might just find the next,more expensive ,week point.

I dug up the picture of the massive shear bolt on my 4' BH. Still seems a bit large but the consensus here is it is correct so it stays. I've never broken it and have carved out some rough ATV trails and shooting lanes in the last 2.5 years.

Do not increase the grade of the bolt. If you want the grade 2 to break less, keep your blades sharp. No need to take the blades off either, flip the mower using your loader and use a hand held grinder to put a slight edge on the blades.

A stronger bolt could potentially result in damaging your equipment, especially if your blades are dull.
