I can't say what oil to use but I like synthetic better myself, better lubrication under any conditions. I just picked up oil and filters to service mine. Trans oil was about $58.00. Going to do the engine oil an filter and the trans oil and filter Tuesday , clean an grease the fittings an do a good once over all around and underneath. Mechanics always seem to give better advise than salesman.

Here is some food for thought that might play with your mind a bit. I had a 2002 Honda Goldwing and after the first oil change I went to Full Synthetic AMSOIL doubled the service interval which was allowed since I used the AMSOIL filter , I did that for all the oil changes(traded the bike at 38,000miles) right up until I traded the bike on my HArley that I still own and which I use Amsoil in that as well. Never a problem, never used any oil, never burned any oil, leaked any oil , nothing. The company I last worked for had newer trucks, then bought new Kenworths, tri-axles, trucks were great ran good no problems, after the first few oil changes they switched from Shell Rotella to Amsoil all but 2 trucks, the remaining 8 trucks started using oil every other day we had to add oil, needless to say they switched back to Shell. The cost was very high for the Amsoil over the Shell's price they bought oil in those big plastic totes I guess about 500 gallon at a time. Was that a fluke maybe I cant say, I am still going to use synthetic because I feel it gives a better lube to the engine parts no matter of the temps outside synthetic still flows and lubes the parts. I did notice another member said the change times do not justify the use of synthetic but MY own opinion is for the few dollars more you will pay for the 3 quarts of oil is minimal and not a bother when you consider the superior lubrication you would get from a full synthetic oil, STRICTLY MY OPINION THAT IS. I like amsoil myself and I'm sure there are others out there that like other brands it's a matter of choice.

I just pulled the Deere manual up and it doesn't state a break-in oil change. The first change is at 200 hours...too much, IMHO.
There is a transmission oil change at 50 hours and that's when I'd do the first oil change too. In fact, I wouldn't change the break-in oil before 50 hours.

Like Roy said and we assumed about the same time you do the transmission do the engine oil and filter that's what I'm doing tomorrow, 50 hours is a good starting point. Heck with all the work I have planned now that the weather broke I'll be over 100 hours in a week or two, time fly's when your not digging or moving material by hand.

Like I mentioned I have a 2012 VW Jetta TDI that uses only a certain Castrol full synthetic but that oil is not available in this country at an auto parts store only the dealer has it (this as of the last time I checked parts stores) Amsoil according to a pamphlet I saw back in September now has a full synthetic oil that meets VW specs. After my last free oil change from the dealer at 30,000 mikes I'll be using Amsoil and the Amsoil filter in my VW. Before that I had a 2004 Chevy Silverado 1/2 ton 4/4 that was on Amsoil Extended service / severe service whatever it was called and changed the oil and filter at 25,000 miles and had no problems engine wise, that truck ran great on 4 oil and filter changes in 100,000 miles. I guess you can figure out I like AMSOIL. I won't bore you with any more stories, have a good night and a better day tomorrow.

You may want to check out GTT. Lots of info on the 1023/1025/1026 over there.

Manuel says change at 200 hrs. Pg. 10-1 specifies what oil to use.
I wish they would have given a torque value to tightening the oil drain plug and the transmission oil drain plug. Do you by chance know? Many torque tightening values have been given. Not those. I over tightened one on an aluminum engine block. Ever since I hesitate to tighten.

I need to buy my next transmission oil were you did. My bill was $124 for 5 gal JD20D Transmission oil and filter. Did not notice I was to service the transmission screen so I have to drain the oil out of the transmission again. Ugh
Did you find a torque value for the drain plugs?

Did not see the torque value any where either, today I ordered the C D version of the shop Manuel it should contain a lot of torque values, I will check it out and let you now but they said it could take a week to get it .
I would tighten the drain plugs good and snug and then just a little more ,drain plugs do not have to be very thigh it is easy to check afterword if there is a bit of oil on the pan .
It is important to make sure the O ring or washer around the plug is in good shape, on a new or recent engine or transmission this should not be an issue.
About the screen in the transmission ,it definitely needs to be cleaned when you do the service mine had a lot of metal stuck to the magnet .

Thanks for your reply. I will go ahead with the screen/magnet cleaning. I will tighten the plugs enough to stop the leaks and snug them a little more using a 1/4" drive. Surely I will not strip the plug with that tool. I bought a lb-in torque wrench so I will be anxious to hear what your CD shop manuel calls for.

Finely got the answer to the hours before the first engine oil change, on mi C D that contains 638 pages if I remember well.
They say to change the oil for the first time at 100 hours . the preferred oil is the synthetic plus 50 ,so I did.
Could not find the torch value for the drain plugs only thing I found [ do not over tighten.]

Thanks for the reply. At 74 hrs. now. Will change oil at 100.
So far no leaks or stripped plugs on the transmission drain and screen servicing.

Do you feel the CD was worth purchasing?

I think for me it was worth purchasing, I intend to keep this tractor for a long time , I worked as an auto mechanic for a long time and this C D has all the information
to repair any thing that goes wrong with mi tractor.
