Hey all,
I just bought an '03 2210. 180 hrs, 54" front blade and 62C MMM. $6300 seemed like a deal to me. But what do I really need to go with it?

I have 20 acres on the side of a mountain in VA, i.e. hilly and wooded, with a half mile gravel road to maintain. I mow about 1.5 acres, flat and hills. I want to move material around so I want a FEL. Probably a box scraper for the road?

So I have a lot of questions I guess. I had planned on buying one with a FEL and a scraper and a bush hog, but now I have this.

So, what FEL is better? How's visibility with the permanent mount one? Do I stay with Deere attachments? If not, what do you like? Oh, it also has turf tires and I don't think that will do in the hilly woods. Can I do chains or do I change tires?

Thanks for any input. This is my first Deere and I'm tickled Green! :D

I would recommend against the permanently mounted loader; the tractor is much lighter and nimble w/o the FEL and required rear ballast. If your 1.5 acres of mowing is "regular" grass, I think you'll be happier mowing w/o the loader. The detachable loader can be on or off in less than 5 minutes so switching is easy.

I have two sets of wheels/tires for mine, turfs and R1's. This is more costly than a set of chains but the traction difference between the tires is pretty amazing. You could try the chains first and see if that works. Running 4WD will be a huge tractrion improvement all by itself, but turfs will give up pretty quickly on a muddy hillside.

I don't have a front blade, but check with others here and they may have some pointers on how to use what you have to grade your driveway. :)

I agree, $6300 is a pretty good price.

Randy,

Congrats on your purchase! For Deere FEL's you will have a choice of the 200X or the 200CX loaders (the 210 is no longer being made). IMHO, forget the 200X --- you will not want the loader on all the time. When you get the loader, make sure to get a ballast box, or as you have indicated, a box blade that you attach suitcase weights to. These tractors can get tippy, especially in sloping conditions, and need all the ballast they can get. Industrial tires are a good choice; many posters use them on their 2210's and claim they are no more damaging to their lawns then turfs.

Okay, so I'm looking at the 200CX loader. I think my local dealer quoted me $2700 installed. Does that sound right or should I expect to get some off of that? (He's the only game in town and I hear he's high on tractor pricing in general.)

So, do I need a box scraper or can I manage a half mile or more of gravel road with the front blade? My thought was to go with a box scraper. We don't get all that much snow here and I thought I could probably manage it with the loader, but it is a really long hilly drive.

And I will probably try chains on the rear for now, and see how that goes in the woods. I was reading in another post that they want many many hundreds for a set of wheels and tires...

Thanks for your responses!

Oh yeah, and what do you all say about aftermarket attachments?

Definitely go with the box scrapper. My gravel drive is only 475 feet long and the first time I reworked the drive with a box blade I could hardly believe how much more quickly and better I could work the driveway back into a crowned road bed without the wheel ruts. Used to take me what seemed like forever doing the job with just a rear blade.

Thanks, that's what I hoped. I've never had a box scraper but have "tried" to work roads with front and rear blades. Not easy, for me anyway.

Randy,

$2700 is list for the loader; he's just throwing in his labor to install.

Aftermarket for box blades etc is fine.

Congrats on the purchase.Go for the FEL you wont regret it. New uses are always popping up. Another tool I like is the PHD. Its not something that you are going to use everyday, but when you do need a hole then its the only way. I have the 9 inch auger, with hind sight I should have gone with the 12 inch. Best of luck

The 2210 will turn a 12" auger with not much trouble in rocky soil? I agree the auger would be handy, even if only for starter holes for planting, but I wouldn't have thought of a 12". That's not too much?

Thanks for the input, btw, I have yet to begin to figure out the potential of this little bear.

What's someone else's favorite attachment?
