Cheap consumer grade voms have slow sampling rates. Breaker points ( and brushes) general play havoc with slow sample meters

I know about sampling rate, but I have an old Fluke DVM that was state of the art in it's day, but it's probably 40 years old. I don't know anybody who even has an analog meter any more. You got me thinking though! I tried putting the existing dropping resistor I had in series, made no difference. I did pull the coil off and measure resistance. just under 3 ohms and 6.8Kohms using the Fluke.

the resistor will make no difference on a jittery meter.

under 3 ohms clearly is a 12v coil that needs external resistance.
