When you look at the new line up of John Deere 4000 series tractors note the same but slightly different engine on four out of six models.

Almost all common components same block/pistons/bore yet 43hp to 66hp.This is world class engineering and good design. They save on part numbers making more profit and able to charge the customers less. By increasing injector flow and turbo psi boost slightly along with recurving the CPU Yanmar gets maximum series model engine change without changing tooling and part numbers.

Base price per JD website:

4120: $26,107
4320: $28,291
4520: $30,163
4720: $33,938

It looks to me like JD has figured a way to charge a premium for increased horsepower while incurring very little additional cost. Basically charging extra for what the machine is ALREADY capable of.

True Story:

Some years ago one of my company's customers purchased an "upgrade kit" for the piece of equipment we had sold them a few months before. The only thing this "upgrade" did was make the machine run faster. The "kit" consisted of one 16 pin computer chip. The customer's cost for this "kit" was $12,000.

Unfortunately, the customer was watching our technician when he "installed" said "kit". The technician walked up to the machine, took one screw off an access panel on the operation panel, popped the old chip out, put the new chip in and told the customer to "sign here".

Pandemonium insued.

John Deere has always charged extra, in your whole life, for more torque/ hp. The difference is that today JD can not afford to stock and store 1000's of part numbers. The cost is carried foward and that cost compounds for the next 50yrs to the customer. Parts cost are high now, JD is adapting for the future.

At GM research cars were torn down into their smallest component and the numbers per car, averaged 20yrs, ago was over 7000 pieces. World class today for any car to survive is around 4500 total pieces. 20 yrs ago many of the 7500 pieces were one of a kind. Now most of the 4500 pieces are shared by many models and maybe the whole platform.

The 4x20 series tractors don't use Yanmar engines, Fuse...those engines are built by Deere.

Fuseboxer: All true... which proves my point.... they're making a lot more money with very little extra cost and charging extra for capabilities the machine ALREADY has. Just throw in a few minor tweaks and KA-CHING. The cash register rings. Total cost to JD: minimal. Cost to us: two grand per model jump. An average across the model line of $2,610 per 7.6hp increase.

SWEET. Gotta get me some more JD stock.

The sales manager had to do a lot of tap dancing and schmoozing........ and I gave our technician the mother of all coaching and counseling sessions.

For $12,000 the equipment gets returned to the dealer and you tell them it's 2 days getting the "upgrade."

Then you give it back to them the next day and say the staff work extra hours to get it back in service quickly. You'll keep the customer forever.*

* Or until he finds out what you did.

A friend's company makes injection molded plastic knives and forks and spoons. And toothpicks.
With a mil.spec. number, they become shims in guided missiles. The cost is similar to that fabled $500 hammer. . .

Using the same engine in different models has been going on for many years in the tractor industry. It is the normal on ag tractors. Thanks to computers it is easy to "chip" for different hp. Often there are other mods - no turbo, turbo, bigger turbo, intercoolers, bigger radiator, and even different pistons on various models using the same motor. Most of the time, it is not uncommon to get 3-4 different models with the same displacement engine.
