Don't worry about it being too low. Over 1000 rpm is fine, while the hoe is learning how to work with you....

RockyRidge, Can you damage the hydraulic pump if the rpms are too low? It sounds like it's straining.

Lower RPM's when running the backhoe will not hurt a thing.
Run lower RPM's while learning to operate the hoe, and increase speed to where it works best for you as you get better.

I don't know who to specifically direct this question to, so anyone can take it. I have often heard about the axle taking stress when a hoe is installed with filled tires. I have also heard that it really doesn't matter. I have wondered for quite a while and this seems like as best a place as any to ask, if you are using a hoe with filled tires, how hard is that on the hoe stabilizers when lifting the rear of the tractor? Then when the tires are off the ground, does that put any stress on the rear axle?

I don't know the answer to this but I am also curious. I am a newbie to tractors and really don't know or appreciate the strenth/weaknesses of hydraulics. I am probably too cautious when I operate the tractor/BH but don't want to break anything.

I want to do the 50 hour service (eHydro) myself which includes changing transmission oil/filters. Anybody have a favorite online place for ordering oil/filters etc or should I just suck it up and pay the high prices at the local JD store? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Thanks for the info and I will get a pic of my new baby soon. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Here in Nova Scotia we don't have a TSC, but when I checked pricing thru local parts jobbers, the JD Guys were "right there" with the pricing. Also, personally IMO, I think that using JD Filters/Fluid on JD products is best but like I said, that's me. Hope this helps.....

Removed the BH today for the first time. Was a pain because the rockshaft arms didn't hold the hoe up. I had to use the outriggers to lift up the BH to remove the pins but when I lowered the outriggers, the BH started to lower. Went back and forth but finally got the rockshaft arms to lift up the hoe. I guess they hadn't been exercised in awhile and they finally worked. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif I removed the rockshaft filter and cleaned it and installed a Frontier RB1072 rear blade for snow removal.

Will the rockshaft arms lift with the hoses hooked up for the BH? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Thanks again for the help and I attached a pic of my new toy! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The rockshaft arms will not lift until the hoses are changed from backhoe operation to 3PH operation. You might have to make an adjustment to the rockshaft arm height if it doesn't have enough travel to lift the 48. Not a big deal to make this adjustment. If you need the procedure, I can copy from my manual for you. Great pic, a real nice baby, wish I could've got a deal like you did.

Hi Goodguy

Thanks for the reply and the info. I thought it had to be hooked up. When you reattach the BH, will the rockshaft arms lift the BH enough to put the pins in? I have read a few posts that had people using the outriggers and even a floor jack to get the BH attached.

I looked through my operator's manual and didn't see the procedure to adjust the rockshaft arms. If you have it, I would appreciate it. I would like to get a shop manual. Any idea what the CD or shop versions run?

I am a very lucky person to stumble on this deal. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks again, Tom

First let me say that I've got a 47 not a 48 but a buddy of mine has your setup, 4310/430/48. If you choose to use the stabilizers, fill your boots, some guys do but JD designed the system so that you don't have to do that. Lock the transport pins in place (2), position where you want to store it, shut tractor off, cycle hydraulics to relieve pressures, unhook hoe hose configuration & rehook to 3ph configuration, start tractor & move rockshaft lever back fully, this should have relieved load on pins, remove pins, slowly move rockshaft lever forward which will drop hoe from tractor mount, slowly move tractor forward & make sure nothing is snagged. This is the same for my 47 & my buddies 48 & should be the same for you. You need to consider mounting some worklights btw, JD has prewired worklight connectors & I definetly recommend you do that. There are 2 purple wires (1 on each side in behind rockshaft levers) that allow you an easy hookup. Just a suggestion that you mount them on outside of ROPS above existing lights, one side forward the other side rearward. I'll dig out my manual over the next couple days & scan the rockshaft adjustment procedure & pm you. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
