NEW BARN/HOUSE RELOCATION AND REMODELLING

I'm also wondering why the move.

That is a very very nice location. Makes me think about Montague Harbour over on Galliano and sweat earned Ganges ice cream cones. Memories of another time.

Got to say....I'm with the other two!! Why would you want to move the house when it looks so nice there and the view is so terrific?

I had the same thought about why move the house, it looks great in its present location.
I have never experienced having a house moved but visualize lots of money spent and a lot of internal damage to the house structure from the move. Utilities relocated, etc. It would make a nice guest house.

It isn't too clear from the photographs but there is a road between the house and the oceanfront. It's a fairly quiet, less often used route into a small subvision to the north. The road is about 80 feet from the house. Moving the house away from the road and further up the hill will provide more of a waterfront estate feel with the road winding up through the property to the dwelling and barn. This is important if I'm to maximise the uplift from upgrading this place. Moving the house will also improve privacy and get the house nearer the top of the hill where solar exposure will be much improved. At the moment, we lose the sun too early behind the hill. Views of the ocean from the higher elevations will actually be better than the current views once I finish clearing the trees immediately in front of where the house is to be relocated. On the other side of the road, I have about 50 feet before the ocean, enough to make it worthwhile landscaping and including a deck and short stair down to the beach.

Another reason for moving the house - each site has its own, unique energy. This really has to be felt rather than explained but there is a quality at the new location which the current one lacks. Maybe as we make progress and I post photographs of it, this will be better understood.

On another note, I just completed the 100 hour service on the tractor 4.5 hours early. I took the opportunity to get it done today while the weather was fine and so I didn't have to break a day's work during the week for it. As usual, despite my best endeavours, the manual ends up with more oily fingerprints than I'd like. I really have to photocopy the service pages and get them laminated so I can wipe them clean. Service was easy enough though, and the manual very simple and clear.

Thanks for the explanation, George. I can understand that.

Pictures are nice but certainly can't relate to the ambiance of the location.

Keeping the tractor busy sounds like.

Sounds like a very interesting project. We used to go up to your neck of the woods (Gulf Islands) yachting almost every year in August. It is truely one of the most beautiful spot in the world for yachting.
How do you continue your project through the Winter season? Isn't it too wet to do much?

Cotton, half our annual rainfall arrives in the three months November through January which can impede construction progress. It's very much a suck it and see situation and I try to make two plans for the day, one I can work if the weather is dry, the other a fallback for those frequent wet winter days.

Sailing around the gulf islands is special with well protected waters, wonderful scenery and an enormous choice of quiet waterways, inlets and coves to explore. I didn't sail before settling here but now have my White Sail 3 certificate and my powercraft operators license and my first boat is on the shopping list for next spring.

Following the comments from other TBN'ers on our house location, I took a reality check by inviting a local realtor with 35 years experience to have a look at the property and advise if our plans for the place seemed sound. Yesterday, he endorsed everything we're doing, including relocating the house where we intend. I was pretty sure we had it right but it was reassuring to have his verification.

Smart move getting a second opinion.

I'm guilty of overdoing a project, or not considering resale in my plans, only to spend allot of money on something with no return.

Looking forward to your continued posts.

Very smart!! Sounds like you had a really good handle on what should be done. I'd love to see a picture from the front of the house down to the water. Would give us all a better ideas of the road too.

Regardless of where the house is....you have a beautiful spot!!!
