Well this week I will be starting on building on the new property. The first to go up will be the attached pics of the plans of the new barn. It will be 120x86. I'm building in a 45x15 office and then ten stalls. I'm going to have self-waterers in the stalls and the rest will be open for riding, roping, etc. The one overhang will be for storing all the farm equipment and my horse trailers. I went 15' wide on the one end of the lean-to and built the spaces 12-14' between to be able to get machinery in and out of the lean-to easily. The office will look out over a 275x200' arena. This way in the winter my girls will have someplace warm to go and I can keep an eye on them and also people that come out to look at horses will be able to either look outside into the outdoor arena or inside to the indoor part. The windows aren't shown in the plans but there will be windows all along the office and outside of the barn. The office will double as a tackroom and have a bathroom with shower, bed, kitchen, etc. I'm going to air condition it too. This way I will be able to shower outside before going up to the house. I'll post you pics as we go along with it. If the weather holds up I'm going to do the site work and layout on thursday and then start putting up poles this weekend. My brothers are coming out on the 20th for 10 days and we hope to get it all finished in that 10 days. We'll see!

Richard,

Nice project. Send pics of the construction. Is this pole type or frame?

Looks to me like your "roots" are going awful deep there in Iowa. D'ya think you'll ever go back to Idaho? I think you're building a very nice place. Good luck!

Jim,
Talking about roots I know. The problem is that I keep making money with the horses and the cattle. We're an ESOP corporation with my practice and so as much as possible everything I make I put back into land and livestock to avoid taxes. Then in a down year you can sell but lately there haven't been many down years. I'm hoping though to sell the other place after I finish with the new one and turn that over into property back home to avoid capital gains on it. My plan is eight more years here and then semi-retire and move home. Problem back home is that where I want to live there isn't a whole lot of money or insurance so it's tough to make much of a living. Where I'm at is a small enough town but you have the headquarters and big industry of six major corporations and several smaller ones in a town of 40,000. There really isn't any poverty here as people either have well paying management or factory jobs. Also the university is right here and I like teaching as well and teach a few classes there. When we go back I plan on still working but just part-time and ranch full-time.

Here's the first pics guys. This is the main frame here and then we're building on two sides to it and the end for the stalls that will slope off of the main building. Stay tuned...
