Re: New \'bota\'s HERE!
Thanks. I looked at a few different winches (Farmi, Treuil and Norse). I liked the Norse because of the attached guards and the pivoting bottom plate (if you remove a set of pins). Also, it is real nice to have two positions for the snatch block as the higher position helps lift the log a little over obstructions and also helps the bottom "horns" dig in. This is a model 450 which is rated at 4300 to 8800 lbs pulling power (varies with how much cable is on the drum). It has 165' of 3/8" cable - nice heavy stuff, along with 3 choker chains. The operating rope lets you stand up to about 10' away and the speed and power vary with how hard you pull on the rope. Also has a built in stand for storage. Operation is pretty simple, lower the winch (and put the brakes on!), engage the pto, reel out your cable and secure it, then slowly start taking it in. There are attachment point so you can hang several other logs while you are skidding. Just watch the overall weights - remember that that 3 point capacity is minus 500 lbs plus your log load. Norse offers 5 models which fit everything from 12hp to 100. This one set me back $2800.00
