New buyer looking for the right used tractor

Hi all,

I am interested in purchasing my first tractor and I am looking for a used 2WD model. We have 16.5 acres to maintain that is essentially flat with no muddy areas. We live in Southern NH and have a flat driveway that I will clear with a bucket (or possible snowblower attachment)

The property is 50/50 woods (with logging road cut) and fields so brush hogging is something I will want to do. I also have access to borrowing a 3pt hitch mounted logging winch that I will want to put to use.

My budget is $2-3000.

Any suggestions?

I think your budget is way low and would really consider a 4x4. My opinion.

I would think for $5k you might be able to find a decent sized used 2wd tractor with no loader. $2-3k seems pretty low to me if you want something that doesn't need a lot of work from the start.

About the only thing that comes to mind are the older tractors like an 8n, some of the tricycle internationals, masseys, or a/c. For $2-3k you are not going to get much.

The Keene, NH New Holland Equipment Locator dealer is advertising a 1968 Case 440, rated in fair condition for $2900, tractor only. Don't know if that would suit your needs, but it's in your price range.

You can generally find something like a Massey TO35 gas for around $1500- $3000. They are 32 HP I think, 2 WD and in good shape, are a good tractor. Parts are expensive. Also, You can search for used equipment, here are some:

If you can do all the work yourself, a grey market tractor like Yanmar, Iseki, Shibaura, Hinomoto, etc. could be okay, but parts are expensive and sometimes difficult to locate. The Yanmar would be my choice, and there are some that were made for the US market (3 digit model numbers). I hope this helps and good luck. John

You might check the availability of 8N Fords. You should find a nice one in that price range. Oldies, but goodies, as they say, and should fit your needs. My step-brother has a 9N, predecessor to the 8N. You can barely hear it running. I tell him my Yanmar sounds like a tractor, but his 9N sounds like a Mercedes.

I started out on my farm about your size with an 8N. Did a super job for bushhogging and deer food plots. My tractor was in good running condition, had been converted to 12 volts and cost $2500. I was very impressed with what that little ol tractor could do. If I was in your price range I would definately look for a good 8N. Parts are real easy to get and it is not a complicated machine to repair.

as others have stated , u will have to look for something like the old fords 8n,9n,2n, etc. to find something in that price range. just to give u an idea here is my 2n that i sold a few years ago, had ahydraulic operated bucket, chains, and i sold it with a KK 5 FT. FINISH MOWER, also i had put a really nice seat on it. sold the wole rig for $3600. ran like a top, tires were excellent (filled). was a real worker. THE ONLY PROBLEM WITH IT WAS, as u can see from the photo, the fel was so far out front, and so heavy , that minuet u got the front tine down the weight just came off the back end. even with chains it was dicey. thats a why i love the 4wd. good luck in your search.

Go to your nearest store and buy the Want Advertiser. Look under Farm Equipment (Tractors)and Construction Equipment. There are quite a few listed there this week.
