we're on well and septic too so when the time came to replace the washer we went he too........standard cycle takes 48 minutes and the spin does make the clothes take less time in the dryer......ours is a top load kenmore.......key is how you load it......heavy things like jeans in first around the outside.....socks undies and light things in the middle......just keep layering it up like that......he detergent is a must too.......I like that it's easier on the septic........you use less detergent to so a bottle lasts quite a long time.....I think there's only a couple of "real" manufacturers now....everyone just slaps their name on basically the same machine......Jack

The 30 something year old Maytag washing machine bit the dust yesterday, so need to buy something. I've got a well, wouldn't mind saving on some some water, so wondering if the 'high efficiency' washing machines are any good. I've read reviews of people that like them and reviews of people that don't. Most likely considering a top load type as those seem to be the least problematic compared to a front load.
I can be sure with todays technology whatever I buy will not last 30 years :)
One word SPEED QUEEN Washers.Check out there warranty verses other brands. My good friend repairs appliances for a living he told us about speed washers 7 years ago.We bought one no issues so far.

We had a Maytag Neptune washer. Everything in it had to be replaced except for the outside sheet metal. It finally caught on fire and burned up with a service man standing there looking at it. NOTHING with the Maytag name will ever be brought into our house.

We had another appliance, not the washer, that gave us all kinds of trouble and the repair man told me several things about appliances. We were having trouble with the washing machine smelling and getting mildew on it. He said that if we quit using liquid detergent and started using powder the smell and mildew would go away. He was right. He also said that 75% of the problems he had with front loaders were caused by people using TOO MUCH DETERGENT. So we cut back and use half as much now as we did. Clothes come out just as clean. If you ever look in the window with a load washing and see suds you are using too much soap. With the two of us four loads a week will do everything we have. The loads take a long time BUT they are huge.

One thing about a front load washer is that your clothes will last longer. When we had a top loader work shirts lasted at most six months to a year. After we got the first front loader they lasted two or three years.

We have talked to several people who have bought the high efficiency top loaders and some are satisfied but most are not. The happiest are a couple with a bed and breakfast. They wash sheets and other items that are not muddy or greasy dirty. The people unhappiest are a farm family whose clothes get muddy or have other dirt ground into them.

When the Maytag burned up they brought us a top loader while it was in the shop. It seemed to take very little time but the loads were so small my wife said all she did was laundry for an entire day. With the front loader she starts a load, sets the timer on her phone, and goes off to do something else.

Oh, and better hurry. I hear the federal high efficiency is going to hit them too (speedqueen). I believe the electronic controlled model might offer an efficient wash now???

I believe I'm going with the Speed Queen AWN432S. It's almost a spitting image of the old Maytag we had with simple controls. Price around here at local stores seems to be $879 (Amazon is also $879). With any of the big box stores brands I might have been inclined to purchase the extra warranty based on reviews and failures that were mentioned and that would have brought the price up to Speed Queen territory. I feel comfortable not purchasing extra warranty coverage with the Speed Queen. Saw some videos of it opened up and running and it looks to be a well made and solid machine that will last a while (probably longer than me). Wife likes it as well which counts more than any opinion I might have.
The Speed Queen models have a ECO mode setting which saves water by spray rinsing the clothes rather than a full tub of clean water, but a normal setting can be used which does fill the tub. The ECO setting also does something with the water temps, but typically we wash with cold water most times.

TBN and Mom approved washer:
Top Load Washers - Speed Queen - Home Laundry Equipment

My mom loves her new washer - really gets her clothes clean. Hot is hot and large load is full of water. Top of the line. Other TBNer's love their's also.

The basic model is the best and the local repairman recommended this one if we didn't want to see him again. This was after the repair on my mom's old kenmore would have cost more than a new kenmore.

edit: opps, I see you already decided on which one to buy after I posted - good choice.

Mom never uses the eco switch.
