Just as I was asking why none of the Big 3 (I guess it should really be Big 2 now that Chrysler is DaimlerChrysler) were making mid sized diesel engines for smaller vehicles, here comes Cummins. Awesome! Too bad it will be a few years yet.

Not all of us need a 3/4 ton truck with a monster-torque diesel. But nice smaller and mid-sized diesels would certainly decrease fuel consumption and increase towing torque in mid size and half ton pick-ups/SUV's.

Well done Cummins. Now I just hope they sound as nice the 5.9 Cummins :)

I was really hoping to see the new Toyota Tundra offered with a diesel. I am still waiting for Chevy to put the Duramax in the Suburban.

:D Like rocks in a coffee can??:D

Seriously, I doubt they would sound like the typical 5.9L... Even the latest version doesnt sound like the previous versions because of the injection and emissions system changes over the past couple of years.. 2010 will bring lots of new options, IMO.. Everyone is working on meeting the regulations and should have replacements for current models, with the fuel economy demand increasing, diesel demand is also increasing so its a natural progression.. It will just take some time.. BTW, it may seem like a way away, but 2007's are already out and '08s will begin being released in January..

bx23barry is right about California hating diesels. The mercedes based diesel in the Jeep Liberty isn't available in California, which is a shame for a 25+ mpg Small SUV with 160 hp and 295 ft lbs of torque. My 99 cherokee with a 4.0 six won't get 80% of that mileage in a free fall.

It would be nice to be able to buy a 1/2 ton truck with a diesel engine option. I heard that next year the Jeep Cherokee will have a Mercedes diesel optional engine.

Hopefully auto diesel engines will evolve as well as outboard motors have. 10 years ago nobody wanted a reduced emission 2 stroke outboard, much less a 4 stroke. They've come a long way. Maybe we will see the same thing in autos.

I guess this just proves I'm a gearhead: I LIKE the sound of rocks in a coffee can. :) A hushed engine, quiet exhaust, isolated suspension, is DULL! I guess I'm the minority however. But I've loved anything that burns fuel since I was a kid. That's why in the family we have 4 vehicles, 1 motorcycle (running), 1 motorcycle in pieces, 1 boat, and now 1 tractor. Boy, am I blessed with cool toys :)

But public acceptance of efficient diesels will certainly increase as they get quieter with no visible diesel exhaust.
