Never thought of that. Not a bad idea. I've also heard gardeners say that if you want to attract deer, plant something you don't want them to eat.:D

I can verify that young heirloom apple trees work very well for this purpose - for about five minutes.

I've alsp heard black eyed peas work very well to attract deer. I haven't tried it on purpose though.

I've planted cowpeas and they are similar (maybe same as) black eyed peas. They grow well in my soil (they don't need much nitrogen). That will be the main thing I plant this April. They are hardy. They handle heat and dry weather well. And they handle grazing fairly well. Since my plots are so small they get grazed hard and I never saw a pea pod or pea.

Next fall look into "Naked Oats". I think Wannamaker Seed in St Matthews, 800 378-2107 SC LBWSeed@aol.com has a lot of interesting ideas. Corn2651.jpg

Thanks Hugh. I'll look them up. Nice looking 'crop' you've got there. I've never had anything grow that well. Or maybe I should say I've never had anything look that good. My plots are so small, anytime something grows that well, the deer overgraze it. Which is the point, I guess.

Hey George...That PTO shaft on your disk has a handle on the back! I think it needs the organ grinder monkey to crank it to keep it going!

Glad to see you got the disk. I am perfectly satisfied with my Leinbach.

Now to brass tacks...the important question...What else did you buy when you went up to Leinbach's outlet? It's time you let the cat out of the bag...

I did not end up going to Winston-Salem. I bought the disk from a dealer near where my property is. You can get them a bit cheaper if you get them directly from Leinbach, but if you figure in the gas money (not a small expense these days) plus more than half a day of travel, it was just easier to get it from a dealer. I was surprised to find the disk that I wanted (the truck was delivering it when I called to see what the dealer had in stock) and I had the day off and the use of a suitable trailer so I took the plunge.

I'm sure it is a good thing (for my wallet) that I did not go up to Leinbach. No telling what I would have come back home with!

And yes, I'm quite satisfied with the disk. It performs perfectly. I wouldn't say it is the best disk that you can buy but I do think it is the best disk for the money. A comparable Land Pride is around $300-400 more and the specs where close in terms of size, weight and materials and that's with flange bearings, not pillow-block. So I'm pleased. No regrets. I'd have preferred to buy it from my Kubota dealer but he did not have one in stock yet and having the day off and a trailer available kind of sealed the deal.

The one I got is the 300s-20-20. It is a 7' model (6'9" cut), and has 20, 20" disks. It weighs about 760 pounds.

I agree about the trip, (which is why I did not drive it, either). However, if I were just starting out and had no attachments...that would be the thing to do and save some money. 20 20 hindsight is always clear.

By the way, that's exactly the same model and disks that I bought also! Now, I know where to get parts...

But maybe we're onto something....a PTO powered disk harrow! Why leave a simple and effective tool alone when we can use technology to make it more.......complicated.

deere755, the disk works great. I suspect heavy pull type disks are even better but for small food plots a 3 pt hitch model is better because it allows you to turn around in smaller spaces.

The disk I have is a a 7 footer. My tractor has 45 hp and 4wd and it does fine but the disk does work the tractor pretty hard, depending on the soil condition. It is still wet here and I could not disk several of my plots because they were too muddy. Even then, the tractor could pull it through, just very slowly. Some of the plots were just right. Even so, I normally ended up in a gear (usually 3rd (3/lo)) with the rpms up pretty high. Where you really notice the tractor working is the fuel guage. Compared to mowing, disking or plowing just sucks the fuel down.

This disk weighs right at 800 pounds, which is about as big as my tractor (which is very light for a 45 hp) can handle. I suspect that when it dries out here, this disk will barely scratch the surface. But, I have a two bottom plow and what I've done so far is plow first and then disk. This really works amazingly well and my very poor, rock/clay soil actually starts looking pretty good after plowing and several passes with the disk.

It has already been done...
