I had a nieghbor one time renting a palce 2 doors down from me and he was taking care of one of his friends dogs, it was a german bull mastof, or something like that and the dog thought he ruled the nieghborhood. One day i got a call from the wife, it sounded like someone had died she was so scared, all she could say is that dog has got to go. Here it urn out that the dog chased my kid from the bus up to the house, it got to the point where she could no longer go outside with the kids cause the dog would chase her back to the house, I couldn't even work on my fence near the nieghbors house cause of it. The shreif dept. was called and they did all they could to keep the dog home and contact the owners to come get the dog out of here cause the kid taking care of it was not responsible enough to keep it contained, on day i was working in my barn and i saw the dog run up to my house chasing my wife inside, so i shot it in the head with my .22 and the dog just shook its head and ran away. A couple days later the dog was still outside roaming around harassing us so that night I went over to the nieghbors to confront him about it, since the deputys could never get ahold of him, he was at the bar of course, and the dog came after me in his yard so I shot it again. The dog ran into the house, and I'm not going to tell you what happened next, but the guy comes home at 1:30 in the morning after the bars close to find the dog . The sheriff dept. was called and i big huploa was made when the owners found out what happened to their pour e dog. They made me out to be some crule heartless , and I was charged with felony damage to property. After going to court about 4 time i ended up pleading guilty and paying a $280 find and $2000 restitution. All because the ed out alcoholic couldn't take care of a dog. I feel bad about it but I would do it again just a little differntly, least I know that dog won't rip the face off or bite a little kid. I'm sure your dog is nothing like the dog that i encountered i just wanted to share a story of one of my missfortunes with a bad dog and an even worse owner.
In my opinion,I think you were wrong in shooting the dog on HIS PROPERTY.
I would of shot it in my own yard, and called the sheriff myself, and filed a formal complaint againts him. That way he's the dirty bird, not you.

My neighbor has a dog that is out all the time, runs game, kills game. needless to say im not too happy with him. Chooses to do nothing about his dog. There is nothing that gets under my skin more then when there are dogs out causing trouble.
My three dogs are in a fenced in area. I put in a three rail fence backed with livestock field fence. it keeps them in completely. My one dog is a basenji mix, basically a sighthound, and will chase anything, my other two are chow mixes and they will follow her. while i have the property to allow them to run free, i choose to fence them in for their and others safety. I have been bitten by a few dogs and i can tell you my carry permit will assure that i am not bit again.
I would not take the chance, your dog is your property and you can be held liable for his actions. What if he really goes after the neighbor or a kid. Put in fencing or put in a dog run, or the coated wire rope with a pully.

Build a fenced dog yard or dog run.

Dogs should not be out running loose. Could get hit by a car, do other stuff you are not aware of etc.

We have 5 acres, but also have a fenced in yard just for our dogs. They are safe there, for themselves and others. They come out when we are home, out in the yard etc(they are always right with us when we are home).

Even if the dog was sweet as apple pie with the neighbors, you still don't know what it is doing when out of your site. And, frankly, it aint to neighborly have a roaming dog.

Our dog yard is 30'x60'. Plenty of room...

Buy a bunch of dog treats and get your neighbor to give the dog a treat every day (or more often). It can work wonders. Get the dog to know your neighbor and it will be friendlier to him. Often dogs just need to know their pecking order - also if you ever see the dog growling at the neighbor then you need to punish it and let it know that the behavior is unacceptable.
Makes sense to me. The dog has to respect/like your neighbour.

That's not hindsight, that's plain common sense.

Yep, having the Sheriff come and get the dead dog off YOUR front lawn when you shot it the first time, would have most likley been an entirely different outcome to the situation...

Heck, the way some people are thinking.... do it right.

Trash your house, beat yourself to a pulp, shoot the dog, drag him into your house, then call 911 and make the biggest ruckus you can about some wild animal before you get disconnected.

After your recover from the trauma, take you neighbor to court.

Live well and prosper.

Most places it is illegal for dogs to harass wildlife, your local Fish and Game or whatever they are called might be able to change his mind about controlling his animal.

Discharging your weapon on someone elses property without that property owner's permission is just plain stupid. Yet another way you could end up dead.

I have been away for a few days so I just got the chance to see all the replies. I feel as though I need to clarify a few things and I would like to say thanks for all the replies.

First my wife has talked to a trainer who is going to work with the dog and see how it goes and she has talked with the neighbor about this and they are ok with this as they are dog owners too.

Second we live in the country on 15 acres and I grew up in the country and we always let our dog run free my wife was raised the same. We have also disscussed a invisible fence for our yard which is about an acre. If nothing works we will give the dog to someone more secluded then we are. It is unfortunate that the area we live in is getting very developed and we have a neighbor right across the road although they are great people and I will get rid of the dog before I ruin the friendship between us.

Third I talked about letting the dog ride in the back of the truck. This is not at 80 mph or even normal highway speeds. This is around the farm across the pasture on the back roads at a very slow speed. If we are going to the vet or anywhere down the highway the dog rides in the cab of the truck.I agree with the statement about people who drive 80 down the interstate with a dog in the back.

Our neighbor says the dog stays in our yard unless he comes to the road to get his mail and that is when the dog comes after him. The dog seems to love his wife and kids just not the man of the house. Too our knowledge he is the only person the dog seems to hate. The dog does go into his yard and growls at him at that point but not unless he gets close to our property like the mail box. If we are with the dog and the neighbor comes over everything is great just when the 2 are alone is there a problem. Thanks again for all the suggestions and we will try anything at this point to resolve this so everybody is happy.
