Hello All,

I just wanted to inform you that we have a new download section for all the manuals on our site. We figured it would speed up and simplify the searching process.
We hope you enjoy it.

Jack, I noticed that there is some major maintenance recommend at 500 hours. These include cleaning the head and adjust valve clearance. Should I really do this or just keep on running if it's running fine. I did not adjust the vavle clearance when I replaced the starter because I really needed to pull the engine to be able to set the crank position exactly.

Bob,

If you will not do the recommended adjustments, I can almost guarantee that at some point in time you'll have to purchase a brand new head, or the valves. The list of all necessary maintenance procedures is in your Owner's Manual. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Ps. Also, if any of you will ever encounter a problem with a head on the engine with more than 500hrs. on it, be prepared
to show a proof of previous maintenance. The Service Center most likely will ask for it. Just a friendly advice. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

OK, your are the expert. I will do the valve adjustment when it reaches 500 hours. I can borrow an engine hoist from Clint Blake, so it should not be too difficult.

Again, thanks for your input.

I am at about 450 hours on the engine of my 422 and trying to prepare for the 500 hours maintenance. I have a few questions that I hope you can answer and I have not found in the service manual.
As you know the service manual recommends cleaning the head, adjusting the valves and doing some inspections at 500 hours.
1. What do I clean the head with I am told that Scotch Brite is good.
2. Should I replace the head gasket and/or the valve cover gasket routinely or only if they at damaged?
3. Should I clean the top of the piston and what do I use?
4. Are there any "watch fors" that I might have missed or any special tips?

Thanks,

Bob Rip

If you had a robin service center do those adjustments for you at 500 hrs about what would the cost be [ just a guesstiment]. My pt has a kohler engine in it but I was just wandering and I would suspect those that have a robin engine in theirs would be very interested to know.

To clean the carbon off of the heads, one mechanic suggested squirting a small amount of water into the air intake while the engine is runnning.
Jack, what do you think of this technique.

FWIW, I've tried it with water, ATF, and various injector/valve cleaners on cars. Water & ATF never made a discernable difference in how they ran. BG 44K or Techron sometimes improved idle quality and reduced spark knock.

I never did a scientific before & after disassembly to see what REALLY happened in the combustion chamber. I never ruined an engine, but I always wondered if I might be dislodging a lot of abrasive carbon from the head to stick in the rings and score the cylinder walls.

Actually, I'd be quite surprised if there's much carbon buildup on any of the current design engines. They run leaner, cleaner, and more efficiently than the old flatheads. I'd probably pull the plugs and look at the top of the piston with a penlight before pulling the heads.
