While we aren't there to see the extent of the problems.. the way he was describing the asphalt coming up it really sounde dlike a scabbing problem.. and / or adhesion. Sounds like the original contractor crowned it wrong and left too thin a surface course.. and/or didn't tack coat the base before laying the first course.. etc. vs a failure of the base.. etc.

You've heard of garbage in, garbage out, well that goes with asphalt also.

If you have a bad base you will continue to have problems. If you are not 100% sure about the base, you will only add to the problem.
Tear it all up redo the base compact the base and do it right.

The contractor never put a base layer down. I'm much wiser now on how to put balcktop down. The reaserch should have been done before hiring anybody but.... The way I see it now is that a base layer should have been placed down using modified base blacktop. He also never put the tachcoat down at all. The gravel drive that was there for 6 years prior to all this had thousands of tons of gravel on it. Started with 500 tons of #2's then went to 57's(1") then went to dense grade (lime stone crushed). As stated we had 8 yard loads of concrete on this drive and it never moved. There was a crown like it's supposed to be but this guy didn't do a good job at all!

Yep.. preferably.. it would have ben boxed out, had stabilized subgrade.. compacted finish grade of a suitable materiallike sandy clay, limerock, or reclaimed concrete / asphalt, then tack coat, then surface coarse of asphalt.. etc..

without a stabilized subgrade.. everything above it is useless..

Lifting Asphalt is always easy! ain't nothing going to make it stick to the sub grade!:D

Sounds like the previous fellow was working with an excellent sub grade but did not have a grader to get the sub grade level and even so an even layer pf asphalt could be laid down.:D :D

Thought you guys might want an update on the driveway.... They started pouring the new drive this past Monday. Some of these pics show just how steep my drive is. The one with the mixer I took that as the truck was coming back down his left front tire was 20" off the ground. scared me more than the driver..... I just told the guy I've never had anybody hurt on my jobs and didn't want him to be the first. This drive looks fantastic! Well hre's the pics of what's been done so far.
