I usually use chains for the diagonal tie downs and straps for straight across tie downs. A stake pocket with a rub rail works better in the application IMO. Also a D ring is really made for a straight line pull where the optimal chain angle is 45 degrees. I’d put my money on the stake pocket winning a 45 degree pull test.

The one thing I have seen on some rub rails is the round bar welded to the frame and rail between stake pockets. Is that for rope tiedowns, or what? I have never actually seen them used before.

Pipe spools, just another tie down, also helps prevent the rub rail from fork lift damage.

I think they are reinforcements to help the rail from getting bent more than anything and also could be used for rope.
