Looks like bad news for the kid. Finally got into where I could see the pinion gear. The end of it is chewed up. From what I could tell, looks like it was somehow jammed into the collar that goes around the ring and spider gears. A small chunk of the collar is missing. But that is just the opinion of a novice tractor mechanic. Anyway thanks for all of your input. Not sure where to go from here.
Sounds like you can handle the labor, so, using the parts book, I would find the part #'s needed and contact the guys with parts tractors and start working up a deal. For what you paid for the tractor, you have quite a bit of leeway on parts.
If it is more than you want to tackle. Let me know and I would be happy to give you $ back. I like to tinker with them. I'm in S Illinois. So it wouldn't be too big a stretch to make a deal work.
Thanks for the vote of confidence guys. Have several leads on parts and parts tractors. So shouldn't be too much of problem finding what I need. Just not too sure of how and where to start on getting to the pinion shaft and changing it out. The best I can see it is all that is messed up. Both sides of the rear drive turn. So hopefully the pinion and possibly ring gear is all that is needing replaced. Again thanks all.
Whew, no problem for the kid. A mechanic friend stopped by and showed me what I needed to do. He thought the pinion gear was usable. But the ring gear is shot. May need a shim or 2. Had me concerned for awhile, thought I was going to have to pull the pinion. And that looked like trouble for me. So all I need to do is find a ring gear and maybe some shims. This is a great board and place to share and pick up info. So time to get some grease under my fingernails!!! : /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
