I am looking into buying a tractor for a new farm in Tennessee. 18.5 acres. Some hills and slopes. Have been considering New VS Used for Financing incentives and trying to save cash the first year. I have been looking at tractors around 50 HP the 5 series John Deere and Kubota, am I in the right ball park ?

Uses
- Tilling/ preparing the land
- Raised plastic mulch beds
- Transplanting / water wheel
- What ever else is needed on farm of that size
- Looking into getting a front loader also

I have an LS XR4150 shutter shift. In this size tractor, most people prefer a hydro. Look for a good dealer. He can be your best friend if you have a problem with a new tractor. In that range, look for the larger frame. They will be heavier and be able to handle the power. I don't know the type of land, pasture, clear cut, timber, hills, flat. Look at what you will be doing the most and what type of attachments. I know. I love my tiller for breaking the garden and seeding new pasture. My grapple is the best for clearing brush. The front end loader will be used a lot. You will use it more than any other tool. As for mowing, I have both a rotary mower and a flail mower. The flail is new and I expect it will do almost all of the future mowing. Even tho my tractor will pull 6 foot attachments, I use 5 foot. They are cheaper, cover the tracks of the tractor and are easier to find used. Good luck, take your time and test drive before you buy. I thought I had the best tractor for me and than I test drove one. It just did not feel right. I would not had wanted to sat on it for 4 or 5 hours a day.

How about mowing? How many acres are you planting? What crops? Are we talking a 2 acre boutique garden or 15 acres of corn?

It doesnt sound like you will need to lift round bales (no livestock mentioned). This means the size of the machine should be based on what you need to do ground engaging tasks (hence my questions above)

The Kubota M series ie M6060 or M7060 are options, as are the Deere 5E or 5M series. MF 4707 is another option. What dealers do you have around you?

This will be about 17 acres or so of hemp for CBD. So the plowing and bedding/mulching with the attachments will most likely be the most strenuous use on the tractor. I am open to all options and options as this will be my first tractor purchase ever.

Probably the biggest factor is your budget. How much do you want to spend? We all like to spend other peoples money.

Yanmar YT359. The JD 5 series is definitely bigger than the Yanmar but a lot depends on how much money do you have to spend and what you are going to be doing with the machine. If you are going to be pulling a plow and using a lot of ground engaging equipment I definitely wouldn't buy a hydrostatic machine. If you are doing a lot of loader work then you would definitely want a hydrostatic machine. A shuttle shift might be the best of both worlds.

I agree that a good knowledgable dealer is a factor. Buying a tractor in the 50hp range gets you into a good sized frame. As you compare brands and models build a list of specifications beyond basic HP and transmission because tractors vary greatly, especially the front end loader strength.

Ones I took note of and compared were weight with FEL, FEL lift capacity, 3pt hitch lift capacity, hydraulic pump capacity(ies), stance/width.
For example, I wanted a PTO wood splitter and the hydraulics on the splitter I looked at needed at least 12gpm. Bolted wheel centers allow you to widen the stance and improve stability and safety. Greater than 2000lb FEL lift capacity means you will not struggle with a pallet/box of green firewood. And so on.
I ended focusing on Kioti and picked up a used DK5010HS. Even so, the local dealer answered many questions I had. He got my attachment and service business! The new Kioti DK series offer HST and bells & whistles.

Good luck shopping.

That's a tougher question then it sounds I think new above 50 HP I am probably looking at 36k with a front loader. I have really good credit and will still have an income which is what originally pushed me towards financing new with the promotions offered ( I think some require 20% down so maybe used/certified is a better route). This way I will still be able to keep as much cash in pocket as possible right now while managing payments, I am really building a farm from scratch so this is one of many expenses. I do own the land outright, and we should be able to pay everything off with a even an average crop
