I've been researching new tractor's (reading everything on this site) and narrowed my choices to what I would like to have and what I really need. I grew up in Eastern Wisconsin where the terrain is pretty flat. I now live in Western Wisconsin and there is no such thing as flat, atleast where any of my property is concerned. I have about 30 acres scattered about. My house is on 12 acres and sits on the flattest ground which is a 10 to 12 percent grade. As you go up the ridge a 100 yards I'm sure it's over 20% and only gets worse the further up you go until you reach a straight up and down cliff.
I need the tractor to move some dirt, skid some logs and work about 3 acres for now (plow and disk, I'm not so convinced about a tiller yet).
I also intend to get some hunting land in the range of 80 to 120 acres in the near future, so I need to keep that in mind.
I really liked the JD 3320 and the Kubota 3240, I thought the L3400 is all I really need.
I went and looked at all three, the first thought that entered my mind on the 3320 is that it looks top heavy, but liked the layout. I also found the thread on this site comparing the width of the 3000 series to the 4000 series which helped confirm my concerns, but the 4000 series doesn't fit my needs and isn't cost effective. The L3240 didn't come across as looking as top heavy, but is even narrower than the 3320. I wasn't sure I liked the pedal layout on the 3240, but you can get used to anything. And the L3400 just looks small, but lower to the ground and reminds me of the tractors I grew up on and maybe the way to go. I definately will try them out on a slope myself before I buy. What ever I buy will have loaded tires, possibly wheel weights? But I'd like some input from people that have experience with these tractors in hill country and with the machines in general.
I grew up driving all the oldies A.C., Fords, JD, Farmall and a Oliver or two. But I went into the service 20 years ago and haven't put too many hours on since, let alone have any experience with a hydro on anything bigger than a lawn tractor.
Thanks for any advice.

Based upon the fact that you have previous tractor experience, I am probably not telling you something you don't already know.

I am not well versed on JD, but when I changed the wheel setting on my L5030 to its widest, it was like night and day...that and also loading the tires with Rim Guard. (We are all hills and mountains here if that helps.) Before the change, it seemed a little edgy sometimes; it is now a rock and very stable.

Kubota's HST (hydro) is a a fantastic and strong transmission (The JD probably is as well.). Here's a thread that recently addressed it: http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/...-kubota-m7040-vs-jd-5403-a-3.html#post1334250

For what it is worth, I bought the L3240 and think it is great. It does have the ROPS, but as I am sure you will hear from others, roll over is possible on any tractor. I have 60 acres in Wisconsin and this tractor will more than meet my needs. I currently use it on my land here in Iowa and have not regretted my purchase one bit. Yes it is a little flash and bit more money, but I have found the quick attach bucket and the 3pt very easy to use. The HST pedals can be tricky to start out as the reverse is very easy to press when reaching for the pedal, but after a while you get used to it. You will find a lot of brand loyalty with Kubota, but like everyone says, it comes down to what fits your needs, wallet and can you get service? Good luck with your purchase and if you go with the L3240 make sure you get the larger FEL.

GO PACK

One other thing I'd like some insight on is a tiller. Is it really worth the money?Isn't there a lot of extra wear and tear on the tractor vs. a small plow and disk? Even with the tiller, the lands going to have to plowed some years anyway atleast in my opinion. I don't think you get deep enough and more than acre is an awful lot for a tiller.
My neighbor has a 6 footer on a L2900 and that's too much tiller for that tractor from what I've seen, but he only works up a garden so I think that's why he get's away with it.
Does anyone know if you can set the tires wider on a L3240, from what I've read on the JD 3320 if you have r-4's there's no adjustment. I know some of these things the dealer can answer, but I like to know as much as I can before I talk to them. I want to know the difference between a sales pitch and someone who know what's going on. The JD guy I talked to says "I want to be your salesman" Of course he does he wants my money. I want him to tell me what I'm getting for my money instead of letting the tractor sell itself. Especially when I told him I was looking at both green and orange.

Thanks for the help!

I have some 20% grades on my 3.3 acres. I went with a Kioti CK30 because it was about 500 lbs. heavier than the L3400. I've got my rears and fronts filled and usually have my backhoe on. With the backhoe my machine comes in around 6000 lbs and w/o it's around 5000lbs.

This is my first tractor and for me the HST is a huge plus on my slopes.

You may already know this but I believe most width specs are with Ag tires. I have R4's which if I remember correctly are about 6-8 inches wider on these machines.

Also, if you only fill the tires 1/2 way or so the weight lowers the cog more than wheel weights.
