Okay, to start with I'm in the process of finishing a tiny house on a piece of property that's roughly 9 acres. All flat land. It was bush hogged last year so there's some growth, but shouldn't be any trees larger than an inch or so in diameter. I would like to have a small garden to feed me and my family and in the future a market garden (maybe an acre or so in size.) I'd like chickens and goats as well.

So here's my question: Should I go with a subcompact package deal from a dealership or try and search around for a used model?

I've noticed used models are hard to find with a FEL and I would need to buy some implements separately (cheaper with a package?)

For the tasks I'd like to accomplish (bush hog, maintain driveway, move dirt around, etc) what size could I get away with?

There's a dealership about 45 min from me that has a BX1880 with FEL, brush hog, box blade, and trailer for $13,500 cash (I'm just afraid that's not enough tractor for me)

Thoughts? Recommendations? I'd like to get out the door for less than $15,000. Am I reasonable with this kind of budget?

When I bought my tractor, the dealer was selling an LS XG3125, which is the same as what is now called the MT225E, for 13,800 with the loader. That combination of size, power and price might do what you want. The only drawback is that it has no mid PTO, so if you were planning to use whatever you buy with a belly mower, this might not work. If you have a Rural King near you, the RK24 is in your price range and bigger than the BX (and the same as the TYM T254, if that dealer is closer). But this all depends on what dealers are near you, or whether you have a way to transport whatever you buy and are willing to deal with the hassle and cost a associated with a distant dealer if you need them. Either way, your budget would make me look at things besides Kubota and Deere, which are excellent tractors, but priced accordingly.

I suggest you go to a tractor wed site like Kubota and they have the ability to build your own . This will give you an idea of what you can afford new with whatever attachments you might need . Good luck

T-B-N Members are pretty generous with their time helping neophytes find inexpensive tractors.

Help yourself. Add your LOCATION to your T-B-N PROFILE.

Here is a BX2380:

Thanks for the advice, updated my profile. I'm located in NE Alabama

For a family kitchen garden a Kubota BX is fine. I recommend more than 18-horsepower for pulling a Bush Hog over seven acres with brush established.

BX tractors are basically for finish/turf mowing and light yard/landscaping tasks. The Loader on a BX is essentially a powered wheelbarrow. If you are serious about a one acre commercial garden 9" ground clearance of a BX will limit you to tractor cultivation of your crop at 9" of height. Tractors with larger diameter tires have 12" or more ground clearance so you are able to tractor cultivate an additional one or two weeks.

A 48" Bush Hog cutting at 3 mph will take about 5 hours 20 minutes to cut 7 acres without a break for a drink, bladder nor fueling. A Kubota B series tractor, with larger wheels/tires which will not drop into every small hole, burrow and rut like a BX, would allow you to mow at 4 mph.

Almost everyone finds more applications than expected when the tractor arrives. Many are ready to buy a heavier tractor within one year. Selling a used tractor is easy. Selling multiple light implements in order to buy heavier, wider implements for a new, heavier tractor requires a lot of time. Depreciation on implements is worse than depreciation on a tractor.

DO NOT RUSH YOUR TRACTOR RESEARCH.
BUY IMPLEMENTS ONLY WHEN YOU HAVE A NEED, THEN BUY QUALITY, WHICH IS USUALLY PROPORTIONAL TO WEIGHT.

If you can work on your own stuff, buy used. You can score some good deals. I work on all my own stuff so I dont care if there is a local dealer or not. I can order parts online.

I only have 6 acres but have a 48 hp machine. Why? Weight of the tractor for 1 for picking up stuff. It weighs >6000 pounds and I can lift a lot with my loader and 3 point. 2nd, hp to turn a 7ft finish mower. I can mow my pastures in 1 hour with the tractor vs 4ish on a lawn mower
