Notice that he didn't say the "sudden downward motion" of the tool was a slip. I gather this was related to the swearing as well (and the anger management comment).

I had the same problem and between going to SEVERAL auto parts stores because the oil wrenched kept breaking. Yes the filter was on THAT TIGHT. I mean who does this, who puts these on so tight?

My old faithful filter wrench that I swear by broke the nylon strap and who knows what torque that needed to beak. On the next one ( heavy duty ) I broke the rivets in the handle.

Too tight for large pliers. I can't remember now what did work, I do know it took about two ours to change the oil.

So, I am an idiot

How did you get your car up on your workbench? Unless I misread the note, you were removing the filter, the BF Channel Locks slipped out of your hands and punched a hole in your nice new bench. But the filter is under the Driver side wheel well, so the tire would be over the bench????

Sorry, just trying to get the whole picture ;-)

Carl

Well it didn't happen that way. I got mad when I couldn't get the channel locks on the filter, rolled out from under the car, and smashed the channel locks into the work bench as hard as I could. I guess I was trying to be cute in my original post and not sound like a complete idiot.

It would appear this is an ongoing problem in the automotive industry. Maybe there is a better way to put these on?

when ti's really really really stuck on.
Take a BF screwdriver and drive it right thru the SOAB at a 90 degree angle.

now you have leverage

then turn screwdriver.

it works

but it's scary, because if it doesn't come off, now the car doesn't run. (well, it will, but not for long)

Actually, two BF screwdrivers are better than one, it lessens the stress on the thin metal housing on each screwdriver, which reduces the chances of the metal housing tearing open. Drive them through the filter at a right angle to each other, grip tightly, and try to rotate the filter off slow (like arky217 described above). If you have extra space on the filter housing, get a pair of the large channel lock style filter pliers and use them at the same time (with another pair of hands to turn those).

Last spring I played heck getting the oil filter off of a 22hp Kohler Courage motor for it's first oil change. That filter looked like it had been through a car crusher when I got it off. It took me about an hour working with that one before I finally got it off. Since I was by myself, I wound up driving one big screwdriver through it and using a pair of the aformentioned pliers, at the same time to get it off.
