I sent my new holland 1520 (1989 4wd hydrostatic) to my dealer to fix a forward creeping/ foot pedal sticking down issue. He tells me we need a new hydrostatic transmission 5600$. Now I ask another dealer, and he tells me he's never replaced a hydrostatic tranny. I tell him what's going on and he tells me for 500$ he'll check the swash plate adjustment and neutral valve. Who to believe?? This tractor isn't even worth 6000 to begin with.

I'm not sure what to tell you other than my 70's IH3200B skid steer is hydrostat (maybe all skid steers are?) and used to have a problem with creeping forward on its own. I found an adjustment bolt for the forward action arms, moved the bolt a few turns, and the problem is now gone. The question I would have more relates to whether there is a pedal position adjustment and is you hold the pedal back a bit will it no longer creep. Just my $0.02, though. Others likely know more.

Sounds to me like you need a pedal adjustment and a stronger return spring or lubrication. I'd go with the guy for $500 if you can't find someone to look at it for less.

I'm probably stating the obvious here. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Yes, but hopefully it won't be even that much. If all it is, is external lube and adjustment. He probably should make sure the $500 guy will start there and not just jump right in to tearing it apart. Maybe it's a $50 bill?

I'd spend some $$ on a shop manual for that tractor and check the adjustment of the pedals myself, first. Our IH did that and it was a very easy adjustment.

we have the manual, and ordered the new spring, did all the lubing etc In House. This why we are going to the next step. The manual speaks about the neutral valve, or the swash plate adjustment as the next step which is why i'm skeptical about the mechanic who tells me just replace the whole hydro($5000) without checking it.

Either way Id like to hear what you have to do to fix this problem. I bougth the same model and same year. In the year I had it, It would sit in neutral, and then decide it wanted to move forward on its own. I would press the peddle to neutral and the next thing you new it went into reverse. It was under warranty, and the dealer came and got it. A week later he brought it back. The pedal was very tight then, and it took an elephant to depress the peddle. But there was a distinct neutral. Within a week, it "loosened" up and I was back to square one.
The dealer again can and took it for repair. This time when he returned it, the truck driver took it off the flatbed, and Got out of the cab, and said I was all set. As he said it it went into "full forward" and through a snow bank and a tree stopped it.
He told me they had done all they could under the warranty. (less than a year).
I continued to use it , always shutting it down when in neutral. You could still feel it want to go one way or the other. After about a year, I went and traded it in on a gear. I will give the dealer credit, the trade in price was what I had bought it for a year before.
I still to this day, wonder why it acted like it did.I wish you luck in solving your trouble.

I have a 1520, and it too creeps when the foot control is in the "neutral" position! I have adjusted the linkage and lubed the shaft with limited results. I am used to just taking it out of gear now, but it is an annoyance! Would love to hear how you fix it.

I'll have to mark this thread for the next time the gear vs hydro war starts up... extra ammunition is always appreciated.. thanks!
