New holland 316 baler problem

need help with a baler everything worked fine last year till a spring on the end of knotting mechanism broke put the new spring on and tried running some hay in the barn through it and I can not make the needles engage so any thing to check would be a great help been messing with it all morning with no luck thanks

For needles to cycle roller(parts key #18) must catch on on dog(hump) inside of hub(parts key #12). Is spring(parts key #20) intact?

also I believe spring #25 is the one I replaced that is on the end of hole mechanism on the bottom out by the chain

okay I went back and looked at it some with no real luck I removed the cotter key that I believe is what holds on the hub and I am able to pull the hub out about 3/4 of a inch or so is there a trick to pulling it all the way off and will doing so change the timing of the machine as in do I need to mark the chain and sprocket position? to me in messing with it seems as if nothing is engaging inside this hub? drum? part to allow the power from the PTO to reach the knotters or needle

Yes removing a chain will cause needle & PH to require timing.

and the chain has to come off to be able to get inside that hub correct? ok then my next question would be where to find info on how to time the baler

Timing instructions should be in operators manual.

Get the manual. Otherwise you'll be reduced to online begging when the hay is on the ground and the rain is hours away.

Baler timing is not something you can do hit and miss. (maybe some old timer can, but I can't) Many adjustments interact with other parts.
