I have a Newholland 56 Rake. Had the rake for 10 plus years no issues until today.

I was raking (flat field) when I heard a bang or clank from the left rear and the tines stop spinning for a bit. They will start up again and everthing is fine for a little while. I opened up the gear box and everything looks good...I don't see any broken or stripped parts. Is it possible that the uv joint by the left tire is going? I got this field up but I don't want to risk any more damage until I get this solved. Thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

Since the rake can be 'driven' by both wheels, its important for both wheels to rotate at the same rate. Hence same size tire, same kind of tire (ground drive tread), and same pressure. If not, the square tube propshaft will wear out and it slips inside the tube once in a while. Also, if the sectional drive shaft has been taken apart, it can get put together wrong by 90 degrees. Then it it out of balance and will wear out or break a u-joint yoke. Best way to put it together is based on the picture on the front cover of a New Holland rake pamphlet.

You can disconnect one of the drive engagements to see which one may be bad , if one is bad.

It sounds like the gear mesh may be loose or you have a bearing going out in the gearbox. Either, can easily be repaired. When a u-Joint goes,it is gone! No stop and start. Would not hurt to check the drive dogs in both wheels to make sure that both are engaging ok. I believe I would do this, before going into the gearbox. Ken Sweet

Thanks... I put the rake up on jack stands, if I turn either tire the rake doesn't turn. If I drop it back to the ground, it will move/operate.

You can pretty much tell where the problem is by turning your rake bars backward with the lever engaged in the rake position. If it is working, it will grab in the gearbox. Watch for slop in the gearbox or tubing going from gearbox to wheel hub. Ken Sweet
