New Holland - Boomer 37 (2015)
(09/29/24) - We have a 2015 New Holland (Boomer 37) that will not run, tractor has only ~ 120 hrs on it. The engine turns over and it starts but only runs for maybe 1-2 seconds then it shuts down. Note - prior to this current no-start condition we were having issues with the DPF (diesel particulate filter); not sure if this current no-start status is related to the previously unresolved DPF matter? Note #2 - The New Holland service manual for this tractor is mostly useless!

I have checked the following and these items seem to be good/normal:
1) All fuses in the two (2) fuse boxes - (one box is forward and near the battery, second box is left of the steering column)
2) I swapped the two (2) relays that are in the front of the tractor, near the battery, this made no difference
3) Confirmed the seat safety switch is working, plus used a jumper wire to override that safety switch. I believe there may be other safety switches, however I do not know where they are; therefore I have not checked them - (other possible safety switches could be? - parking brake, shuttle-shifter, clutch..?? I am not sure).

I am no mechanic, however, I am somewhat mechanically inclined. My layman's opinion leads me to believe this tractor will not run due to lack of fuel. With that being said, I removed the confusing, FIVE (5) WIRE 'fuel shutoff solenoid' - (see attached picture). Once removed, and still connected to the electrical system, when power is applied via the ignition key being turned-on the solenoid retracts (pulls-in); however, it releases in approx 2-3 seconds. It seems to me that the solenoid should remain retracted (pulled-in), thereby allowing fuel to flow. The failure of the solenoid to remain "retracted" leads me to believe that the "hold" part of the solenoid is not working? - (very possible I am wrong). Maybe the solenoid is good, but the signal to keep it retracted (pulled-in) is malfunctioning. I considered applying a jump-wire to the solenoid to see if it would remain in the "hold" (pulled-in) position. However, I have not done that yet because I am fearful of damaging the solenoid! I was SHOCKED to learn that the solenoid cost ~ $1800....ouch!!! - (shame on New Holland!).

For testing purposes, does anyone know how this five (5) wire solenoid functions? - [there are 3 wires in one cluster (black, red, yellow), and then 2 wires in the second cluster (both black) - see attached photo. From my on-the-tractor testing I learned that when the solenoid is energised via the ignition switch, it is the two (2) black wires that activates (pulls-in) the solenoid.

Most importantly, and beyond the solenoid, other ideas on how to fix this tractor will be greatly appreciated!

Please contact me with any questions or comments. Your feedback will be appreciated.

Thank you.

Welcome to TBN.

Hopefully others will reply. Your description of the fuel solenoid does lead to some concern. However, I have head of solenoids the use a circuit to initially pull the plunger back and another circuit to hold so that might be what yours is with its multiple wire.

Can you provide some more detail on the DPF issue you were having? How long ago did it start? Was your tractor in limp mode (power restricted/limited RPM's)?

will this work for you??

Other tractors have solenoids I would try to find something
to replace what you have I know they cost a lot less than $1600

Thclimer - Your response is appreciated, thank you.

Thclimer - Your response is appreciated, thank you. 1) Five Wire Fuel Solenoid - A local diesel mechanic tells me this is a very sophisticated solenoid, he suggested I not tinker with it too much, esp when it comes to jumper wires and experimental bench testing. 2) DPF - Yes the tractor went into limp mode, it would start and run for 5 to 30 seconds then shutdown - (the book says it should run for 30 seconds in limp mode, so the tractor can be moved). The local New Holland dealership was recommending a "forced regen" using their computer software. That was our next move, however, that was when the tractor start - (it will no longer run, except for ~ 1-2 seconds at a time). 3) I threw in the towel, admitted defeat, transported the tractor to a local independent diesel mechanic, says he will look at it next week. I will update once I have some answers and e$timates. Thank you. GBL

Williy - Thank you! Yes, I also saw solenoids priced online for a lot less. Unfortunately, I saw no after market 5-wire solenoids that would work on this New Holland - (my layman's opinion). On YouTube I saw mechanics buying OEM solenoids for John Deere, Bobcat, and Massey Ferguson for less than $300 each, unfortunately not New Holland. See attached photo, from Messicks tractor parts, $1,851.87. Thank you. GBL

That price on the solenoid is insane!

I'd really like to know why New Holland chose to use something like this when for decades, themselves as well as other manufactures have used a similar functioning part for a fraction of the cost.

If the solenoid unscrews, remove it but leave it hooked up incase the ecm reads its position..
I’ve never seen a 5 wire s/o solenoid.. I’m wondering if it’s not a “rack actuator” that varies the voltage to move the fueling mechanism to control fuel/rpm.??

thepumpguysc - Yes, I did that. I unscrewed the solenoid and left it electrically connected to the tractor's wiring harness. When the ignition key was turned to the "on" position the soleonoid would pull-in (retract), however, it would not "hold", it would release and the solenoid pin would pop out in ~ 1-2 seconds. This leads me to believe the solenoid is bad, or more likely, and hopefully so, the solenoid is just not receiving a "hold" signal to keep the pin retracted. Thank you. GBL
