New Holland LS170 siezed hydraulic filter, plz help

If space permits, I have used a dull air impact chisel on the base. My first choice is usually a chain wrench.

There's always the "stab it with a screwdriver or crowbar and turn" usually I've only done this when they are tight and have limited space for any kind of wrench. Once you crack it loose you should be able to turn by hand

Last time I tried this method, in 1976, I ended up ripping most of the filter off. No joy after that!

I feel for bcbarbare. Its most frustrating when a 10 minute job takes all day. Murphy's Law in full force.

I think the rubber sticking to the filter base and the mounting base is a lot of the reason it won't turn. Sure, it being over tightened has a lot of bearing too but you figure the 'gluing' area that the rubber gasket has and the amount of torque required to turn it being the diameter it is, just my theory LOL.

That was a last resort. Because of the metal screen inside the filter I would have removed the base to isolate it from the system to insure no metal shards found their way in. Then rebuild and thoroughly clean the base.

Update: Strap wrench got it with no fuss, got the big boy with the chain. Machine runs better than when it was brand new, which I attribute to switching the hydro fluid to a blend of about 80/20 AW 32/10w30.
