I like the raised panel with louvered as a second choice. Most notably, I like the functional hardware (hinges and holdbacks), they add a lot to the package.

Good Morning Bmac,
I hate Monday morning quarterbacking, and even worse, people that just through out random comments without anything useful or constructive. Unfortunately, this is what I'm about to do. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
When I saw your picture of the exterior of you home, I thought is was just primed and not painted yet. The overall look of the house is very stark. You got some great features and detail, but the color and texture all blend together to create a solid mass. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
The shutters will soften it a little and give you some warmth, but it's a very minor change that doesn't solve what I see as a problem.
Landscaping will also soften it up quite a bit, but again, I think it's just gonna soften the edges some. Plants can make a great home fantastic, but they are only icing on the cake. The cake needs to be finished before you start adding decorations to it.
What I think, and again, I hate saying this because it's not my home or my dream, so it's not my place, but I'm hopeful that maybe you see the same thing and are also looking for some ideas. The house is a giant WHITE focal point out in a country setting. With the trees and nature all around it, the home jumps out at you, but doesn't show off it's features.
You need to take advantage or your archetecture!! It's too late for brick or stone, but you can add some color and totally change your overall look entirely. I'm not a designer, nor do I have the ability to tell you what will work. Sometimes you have to bring in outside help or just start experimenting.
Just to continue sticking my foot in my mouth, I'm gonna suggest you paint the colums a warm dark color to bring your eye into the porch. The side wings might look less impossing if they were a lighter color than the main body of the house and the dormers might be another color to accent them. Or just the oposite. I really don't know. Again, sorry.
Shutters and what style of shutter isn't something I'd even be thinking about right now.
I do apologize for being so blunt. You have an amazing home. The interior of you home is at the very top of a high end home. The materials and finish are first class. But the exterior just doesn't have the same WOW factor, or curb apeal. To me, you home looks unfinished. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I think Eddies right, but all you need to do is paint the trim around the windows, and maybe the columns, then it will be fine.

I understand where Eddie's coming from. From experience I know that right now all you see is the house......uh.....because that's all there is. The shutters will definitely be an improvement and landscaping will also help a lot. Just adding other elements to draw your eye to will help.
As for the shutters, I would go with either the louvered or the raised panel. The slat type to me are more "old world" or Tuscan as my wife would say. You've shown black shutters in your photos and I've seen several country / colonial style houses with that combination and it really looks sharp. You might want to also consider a color, maybe a burgandy or a deep blue? Our last house was a two story colonial that originally had burgandy shutters that we later changed to black when we added vinyl siding a few years prior to selling it. I thought I had a picture here at work but they must be on the home computer. I'll try to send one this weekend just FYI.

I msut confess, when I saw the picture of the front of the house I thought the exact same thing that everyone else did. I think your photshop doctoring gave just enought to see that shutters on the right and left wing windows would break it up.
I don't have a preference of shutter type.
I'll go against the grain and not suggest painting the columns. What I would paint in an accent color to match the soon to be installed shutters is that facia board right on top of the columns. Also suggest accent paint color ont he boards on the tops and bottoms of columns but leave the columns white. My suggestion would be to put up shutters, paint them classic green, the most classic combination in the world is white house green shutters. If not green then a color of your choice.
Just paint the facia board above the columns the same color as the shutters and stand back and take a look. If not enough then paint the boards at the tops and bottoms of the columns. I wouldn't paint much more than that to start. I think it might be enough.
I recomend you do go lightly with your accent color, as if you do to mutch it begins to look "cutsie". Painting all aroudn each window etc. in an accent color. Go slow, perhaps the facia board, the top boards above the columsn and the bottom boards of the columns and the shutters. Yu might even be able to doctor it up in photoshop, the colors, just using rectangles. If it is not enough, then suggest move up to the dormers. Take it easy a little at a time and evaluate each portion before you okay the next.
Now that I think of it, I would try and paint the items mentioned above the exact same color at the brick. That would provide the cohesivness I think would be esthetically pleasing. Might have to go just a tone deeper than the brick.
I am glad I wasn't the first one to respond. At least with so many repsponses you can start to gauge the valididty of the honest feedback.
Again, BIG TIME, your hosue is GREAT. Beautiful in fact. These small suggestions in no way deter form the over all magnificent home you have built.
I mentioned it befroe and I'll say it one more time and let it go. The white trim mixed in by the front door and side windows of the front door, don't see "to me" to be harmonious. Only my opinion.
