Well I sold a bunch of cattle this last month as prices have gone really high on bred cows and first year heifers and am moving more of my operation to horses. To do this I went out and bought this stud horse who is an own son of Shining Spark out of a Colonel Freckles mare. He is a four year old this year and already has a huge trophy case from last year as a reiner. He was 6th at the futurity and has won his share of the shows. It was a pretty sound investment but this horse is that one in a million that you look for. I'm going to keep him going in his reining and then show him in roping and the Versatiliy Ranch classes. We'll start standing him at stud this year as well. I have been working on this deal for almost a month now and finally am going to pick him up tomorrow in Gainesville, TX. Pretty proud day for us. Just thought you horse people may want to share in it. Here's a couple pics from when I went down to do the vet check on him.

Gorgeous horse, doc! My wife is partial to buckskins (he is a buckskin, right?)

Grand look horse you have there, and a lucky horse indeed to be going to nice home.

Okay..since I know nothing about horses, why do people braid the tails?

Braiding tails is usually done for shows. People also braid the main for the same reason.

Nice looking horse! When you do the vet check do you have them do a semen analysis? We didn't have one done on our stallion because he was just under two. Turns out he was potent. How do Shiner's offspring look?

He's a palomino. Similiar color but your buckskins will have dorsal stripe, black around their lower legs, and a black mane and tail.

Thomas,
This horse's tail was braided because of all the checks that were being done for one. In addition that's the trainer of the horse that is in the pic and they always braid them before they ride so they stay looking nice for the shows as Mike said.

Grant,
For what I had to pay for this horse we checked everything!!! LOL. He checked out fine for everything except that he had a left mildly degenerated lower hock joint. The horse has never been lame and wasn't lame with the flexion tests either. That joint will fuse in a year or two naturally so it's not a big concern. That's one of the other reasons I'm bringing him back here is so we can do a five week therapy on it with Adequan and then send him back to the trainer and get him ready for the derby in the spring.

This colt doesn't have any offspring yet. He has been in competition for the last 18 months straight. In reining the futurity is the biggie. Not many of these good horses are bred until they are four or five because they are training and showing so hard. It's the horses record then that determines how much they're worth as a breeder.
