Guys, Thanks for helping out. I am still planning a lot of things here.My Bl lives there too and Mil on the other end. Community is called Opal...Storms barely miss them all the time...Vilonia was just hit last year...Concrete slab, with steel roof and straps installed.City water is there, but might cistern for garden and yard. I am concerned with retirement taxing rates and personal taxes. We do not have it here yet. Yes, ARK. will pay $1000.00 on an approved storm shelter...Mississippi will pay $4000.00 rebate

I am planning to build a storm shelter modeled after commercial shelters in my garage. I already bought steel square tubing and steel plates and had them precut. I just need to weld it together and design door. The shelter will be bolted to the slab the same way as the commercial shelters by Hilti anchors. It will be insulated and lined by cedar or birch wood planks and serve also as sauna.

What thickness steel plates are you using for the outershell? The door should be removable from the inside and have three points to hold it shut? I have looked at a lot of these and they are expensive. Belive I might put fiberglass buried in back patio, but they look so small inside?

I wanted to buy a shipping container and burry it as a tornado shelter. The problem I see is that people would not go there until it is too late. Therefore I decided to build it inside the house.
The shelter, sauna will have triangular shape with the sharp corners cut off. Since it will have two door the metal door will open outside and the insulated sauna door inside. Therefore I will install a "window" that will be bolted in and could be removed from inside without tools. The skeleton will be welded from square 2x2 tubing and the shell will be welded on from 1/4" steel plates. It will be anchored to the floor by Hilti anchors. All the material such as precut tubing and metal plates cost about $1200 so far.

Ladia, it all sounds cool, but i am wondering about the 1/4 inch plates? Being triangle will give it more stength and the wind less pressure on it??I haven't been able to find out many stats on prebuilt saferooms as the steel enclosures are called.I do like the idea about the window, will it be special glass or plexiglass? I am going to Ark. soon, and hope to scope out a few examples. Beebe was hit by F-4 tornado in 2005, it went thru town in 45 seconds? Cut thru the middle like hot butter..

To be exact the "window" will be a metal plate bolted to the opening. I said "window" in my description because it will be an opening where window is usually installed. I have not decided on the size yet. Most likely somewhere between 2X2 and 3X3 ft.
I think 1/4" is strong enough to prevent flying objects penetrating the wall. There also will be insulation and wood on the top of it.
The shelter will be bolted to the floor in the corner of the garage.
