I have been using this forum for a while as a great resource for information and ideas for a while and thought I'd say hello. I'm in Amish country in Central Pennsylvania and finally was able to get that piece of land I've always wanted. 18 acres of woods with a cabin. The first addition was a CK30 and so far it's been worth its weight in rock moving and moving downed trees and stumps alone.
This will be the future homestead but short term it's a place to weekend and hunt. Plans for this summer include a home for the tractor and some work on the existing cabin. I'm leaning towards a pole barn and using lumber from the Hemlocks on site for the siding. I'll be asking questions and posting pics when that gets off the ground.
Actually I'll throw out a couple questions to get started.
I'm looking to swap timber for lumber. The hemlock has to come down and with the low prices now I'd rather have the lumber. I have a local mill that will split 1:1 on the lumber if I fell and buck the trees. good deal? Can anyone recommend a good starting point to determine what the specifics are if I use that wood for the joists and rafters. At what point do I really need to think about building trusses instead? Any thoughts on using the hemlock for the posts if I set them on concrete piers that finish above grade?
That was a little longer than I intended but it's easy to get caught up in the fun stuff. Have a good one and I'm sure you'll see a lot more of me as this progresses.
