Have about 10 hours on my new 2520.

When I turn my key to the ON position, the manual says you will hear the "engine fuel shut-off soenoid engage with a click". I get a constant clicking sound, almost like a clock or more accurrately reminds me of when my started died on my car I got a clicking sound. The motor starts fine but seems odd to me. I mentioned it offhand to my dealer and he thought it may be the hours clock? It is soft enough that if there is a lot of background noise (or you are hard of hearing) you may not hear it but it gets my attention.

Secondly, the manual says that blue white exhaust smoke is normal in the warmup but it is 70 degrees out when I start it in the morning and I get about 3-5 seconds of fairly thick smoke. My 955 never did that (sometimes I would get a little black smoke) but I think there is a different type of fuel injection? will it be even worse in the winter?

Thanks

cello my 2520 version 2011 does the same thing. On my dash a lamp lights indicating the glow plugs or manifold heater is operating and will extinguish in about 15-20 seconds (with a ticking sound) whether you start the tractor or not. I always let the lamp go out before starting regardless of the outside temperature.

Hey guys the ticking noise you are hearing is the electric fuel pump that is used to prime the fuel system if you run out fuel. On the right side of the motor you will see what looks like a silver metal inline fuel filter with two wires coming out of it that is where the noise is coming from. You can do like I have done to my 2520 and unplug it. Tractor will start and run just fine without it. Just remember to plug it back in if you run out of fuel . :-D

Cello... I have the same issue with my 2011 2520 smoking at "cold start", even when it's 90 outside. I've asked my dealer about it, and they said it's normal. I belong to another tractor site and put up a thread about there because (it seems to me) that it's getting worse (I have ZERO issue with it in the cold weather), and I now have about 35 hours on it. I even "forced the issue" (mine runs very rough at startup) by revving up after a cold start and shot a video of it (posted on YouTube). Everyone that chimed in on the thread said that there is absolutely nothing wrong with my tractor.

It was explained to me like this: the motor needs to warm up to its proper operating temperature, and that's over 600 degrees internally. At that temp, even 100 degrees is cold. Start it, let it warm up a couple of minutes without putting unnecessary strain on the motor, then power it up and you'll be fine.

Check your idle speed setting and verify that with your dealer. Idling too low can be a problem too.

Hello cello and :welcome:
Congrats on your new machine.

The noise is perfectly normal. Don't worry about that.:)

As for the smoke,I don't know what is considered "normal". I get a puff, and only a puff at first start, no more no less,no matter what the weather. My 2520 has 102 hours, and it's been that way from day one.

Thanks for all of the replies. My reference point is the only other tractor I have had and that is the JD 955. You realize how used to the sounds and sights you get from the tractor and I have to admit the 2520 still feels like I am out on the second date with a new girlfriend. I am reassured that what I am seeing/hearing is normal.

The other thing that threw me initially was intermittent trouble shifting from neutral into low or high. On the 955 there was no neutral or at least I just easily shifted from the slow to fast without any problem (and you could start it while in gear) It wasn't until I read one of the posts from this forum that if I feathered the forward pedal gently it would slide right into gear. You would think they would describe that in the operators manual.

You're gonna like it, I never stop finding new things to do with a tractor. :)

I find the same thing on mine... A little "tap" of one of the hydro pedals and it seems to align the gears nicely. I am able to park overnight on a flat, level surface. I park, set the brake, and leave it in gear. When I go to start in the morning, that's when I take it out of gear and unset the brake (I keep my foot firmly on the brake, though). I find that I seldom have an issue getting it to pop into gear smoothly that way since the gears don't have a chance to come out of alignment.

Your 955, like late model 855's, used a mechanical fuel pump so it only operated while the engine was running. All 755 and early 855's used an electric pump that made that clicking noise as soon as the key was turned on. Deere made the change when they switched to a top mounted fuel tank from the previous front mount design. BTW, your 955 did have a neutral position between fast and slow positions. You just never needed it because as you said it will start while in gear, as long as the hydro pedals are in a neutral position.
