Expletives deleted. :D

Good luck, I know how I'd feel if my treasured little 855 had a building collpase on it.

Pete: Been there, done that. Went on a chimney fire a few years ago. While there, heard second dispatch for possible structure collapse / fire. Hearing ones own address over the radio raised the BP a bit. It was the carport thankfully. Neighbor heard crash and saw "smoke". The smoke was the diesel genset starting up as the carport took down the power feed to the house. Mine was caused by snow load.

Be careful,
Tom

So sorry for the building and tractor loss....Could have been a lot worst
You said you had been in barn a few hours before could have happened while you was in the shed...

Good luck with insurance co. and thanks for the good work with VFD

Tech Writer, yeah, it feels pretty bad.

Tom, I've been at calls at other members houses and hope I never hear my own. The new house on this land was built for a snow load that the architect said was just plain silly and way overkill. So it should be about right, hope I never really find out. I also put the little metal rails on the standing seam roof so that the snow can't slide off. That paid for itself with this snow. The new tractor garage not quite in service yet doesn't have them and it dumped it's roof load all at once today. BTW, the top inch or so of the snow is really sleet or ice. We went back and forth between sleet and rain. So it's a bit heavier than it looks.

ET, it's odd. I feel guilty for feeling bad because it is all just stuff and can be fixed, as opposed to what happened at the fire call I ran. But, it still sucks. I started late in life with the VFD thing, been doing it for 18 years, have a more left in my I'm just having to adjust what I do.

My sympathies to you Pete. Great pictures though. I'm not sure that I would have the heart to even make a posting under such circumstances. Good luck and best wishes. We do love pictures. Looking forward to seeing it all fixed.

Here's the view of the shed from the house. Not what you want to see in the AM. Note the little green roof the tractor that was inside the shed.

The whole shed went south (literally in this case) at once, and just folded evenly on one side and landed on the ground. The main roof just missed the tractor and the overhand section is what landed on it.

Know everyone likes pictures, just thought I'd toss in this one.

Pete

Whoa... That's the whole building - laying flat on the ground?!!? I'll bet the noise your wife heard was really somethin'!

Looks like you folk's have more snow than we have right now...

Ice is the worst. We lost power for 5 days last Feburary. As my wife says she is not ready for little house on the prarie. We were lucky as last summer I was in the attic and found two rafters broken. We were close to having our roof collapse and did not even know it! Good luck with the tractor. No matter how bad you have it, look around there is someone dealing with worse.

Sorry to see the mess, and will be interested in the outcome (and pics of the clean-up).

Any pics of the inside of the structure before the failure?

Would it be better to let the snow slide off rather than hold it on the roof with the little metal rails?

Today I finished pulling the tin off of the purlins, cut off the corner of the roof so the tractor could be pulled out, and tarped the tractor so there would be no damage from the rain tomorrow and at the end of the week.

Insurance co. said "OK to shoring up all the stuff leaning on the tractor", and said if something shifted in that process and there was more damage that would still be covered. Have claim number and contact, will speak with them tomorrow. Due to bad weather this last weekend, they are swamped with claims but still thought they would have an adjuster out here this week.

No pics of the inside pre-fail. Have one pix of the shed from a distance. The view is about where I had my "what the heck" moment as I drove in. It was an open pole shed so the strength of the poles was the key. That's why it "trapazoid-ed" down flat. Lesson to learn here is open sheds work best when they have 2 side (a corner) for better stability. It was on the land when we bought it.

As for snow guards, I'd say Not needed if you don't have gutters, and a good idea if you do. New not quite finished tractor garage doesn't have them, it dumped it's snow in one big pile. House has them, they are working great as the snow is staying on the roof and melting and the gutters are also still attached.

Next step after the adjuster is to figure out how in the world to shore up the 3 interconnected beams so I can start to cut my way towards the tractor. A 6 foot jack will be key, along with some cribbing and 'A' frame support. That will be a multi-person task for an afternoon, probably weekend after next. It is all stable and safe from the environment now.

Pete

If the insurance company is accepting the claim, I would let them do the recovery. I'm sure I'd want it done asap too but your time is money. And why risk injury?

I'm not sure they would want to do it but a tree company should have all the equipment (and labor) to do it.
