Thanks for the warm welcome.

Creekbend: thanks for the info. This is a 1997 model (with only 375 hours!)
RaydaKub: I certainly hope you're right! And good advice about the fluids, I'm going to do that today.

After I get some more experience I'll post a review of my tractor. My dad convinced me to get one with a FEL even though I couldn't think of what I would do with it. Now, after playing around, what DON'T you do with a FEL?? That thing is amazing and the tractor is so much fun. I think it's more fun (and way more useful) than the motorcycle I sold to pay for it.

It's probably way more tractor than I need (I have 10 acres, half timber and half improved) but like RaydaKub said, I've probably bought my last tractor and I couldn't beat the price: 7 grand with a tiller and auger included. Bought it off a very old man who appeared to have a passion for tractors and just had too many.

Around here (SW Missouri -- Joplin area, I'm sure this once-faceless region is familiar to all now) everyone has a FEL on their tractor. Now I know why!

Actually I think that is a good size tractor for your needs. When buying, I look at tasks, not acreage. We have our biggest tractor on our smallest farm.

Yes, you're probably right. At least I hope to use it to its fullest potential.

I also have my first newbie question. When I park the tractor, should I put the PTO lever and FEL joystick in the "float" position, or should I just lower them down to the ground? I don't know what float means exactly, but I assume it means "hydraulics off" or something like that.

NVM -- search is my friend. Figured out the float in another thread. I guess I should put the 3ph all the way down when I park, too?

You can put it in float, but I don't know of any real advantage, I often just shut the engine of an then push the joystick forward until it goes down. I also lower the 3PH, but there have been times I have left the FEL and 3PH up; not a big deal in my opinion though long term I prefer them down.

There are several threads on using float as well as the FEL in general.

You might want to think about some bucket hooks and at some point a set of pallet forks.

I have found the best learning tool to be seat time.

nice tractor, have fun!

Looks like a good unit and a great deal for $7K.

As for the hydraulics, you won't hurt a thing by leaving the 3pt hitch or the loader raised when you park it, but for safety's sake always lower them.

The float on the loader is mainly used for cleaning/scraping/loading on a hard flat surface. For example loading from a pen with a concrete floor you can put the loader in float mode to keep it right down on the floor without putting too much downward pressure on the bucket (wears it out on concrete.) It can also be used for certain grading and back dragging tasks.

Good luck with your new tractor.
