Tractor
L3400
My new L3400 arrived yesterday afternoon. WOW what a tractor!!! I've had an old Bolens g152 for many years and was impressed with this new machine. Twice the size and power. I only had time to ride around in the yard and woods when I brought it home. Only has half hour so far. Any ideas as to breaking in period etc...? I will mainly use it for mowing and maintaining my 6 acres and ride down the road to in- laws for plowing gardens and such. Will post more on it when I've added more hours. Gunman

I think the manual may tell you to not run it at full throttle the first 50 hours. PTO speed is usually a couple of hundred RPM below full throttle. In my opinion, I don't think you need to worry about a break in period other than the fact I'd try to vary the RPM quite a bit for awhile, and I'd put it under a load now and then. In other words, I'd just start out using it. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

That was one question I was looking for an answer on. The book says not to run at fast speeds for first 50 hrs. I need this tractor to mow with. Will mowing at the pto speed before 50 hrs. do any damage to the tractor. Sorry for the newbie question but I've never owned a new tractor before. All of mine had at least 400 + hrs. when I bought them. Thanks for the input, any other suggestions or ideas? Gunman

In my opinion, no, it will not hurt the tractor. At least it never hurt my tractors and I mowed with both finish mower and brush hog, and tilled gardens before I had 50 hours on them. And when my cousin's New Holland was delivered new, the salesman drove it right off the trailer and into 2" to 3" saplings with the new brush hog. If I were you, I'd just take off mowing. And then for me, personally, although I don't know that it's necessary, I'd take a short break, go back to idle for a couple of minutes every half hour to an hour, then go again.

SIR,
it is my understanding the L3400 replaced the L3000.
i have tried to check the specs on the L3400, but could
only find the hp rating, which is 34.7. my L3000DT is
rated a 32hp. can you tell me what other changes your new
tractor has. my L3000DT is a standard transmission, no frills
tractor, but i like it. in the pics you posted, it looks like you
have the rear wheels on the very inside position. mine was
like this when i got it, and the first thing i did was to move
them to the outside position, and add homemade weights.
this makes a lot of difference in the stability of the tractor.
i see you did not get an FEL? big mistake. this is one of the
best, and handiest tools on a tractor.
good luck with your projects.

I had thought I told the dealer to set my rear wheels at the widest setting. I guess he didn't hear me because he filled the tires instead. Anyway, how hard would it be to set the wheels myself? Don't have any experience doing this. I should take it back and have him do it if it wasn't for a 75mile round trip. He didn't charge me to fill rear tires. I plan on putting a fel on in another year. The funds for it where not available and I didn't feel like pressing my luck with the wife. As far as being happy with the tractor I am. Love the power and it should pull some good size logs out of the woods. Any suggestions on boxblades? The only difference that I was told about between the 3000 and 3400 is the shuttle between rev. and low range. Gunman

the major change is cosmetic. They gave it a new look. Another change is they did away with the 2-stage clutch. Slight increase in horsepower. Heavier front axle to better suit the weight of end loaders.

USE THE TRACTOR! it won't hurt it, but like Bird says mow for a while then run at a lower rpm for a bit, just use good common sense. as for the FEL get one as soon as it is feasable. at least for me they are the handiest attachment to have., between your 6 acres and your inlaws u will find many uses for it.
