I had Morton Buildings out to give me a bid on an outbuilding.

The plan is to have a free standing shed to part the tractor, lawn equipment, truck and enclosed trailer in.

I drew everything I could "think" that would go into the shed to scale and figure a 30x40 shed would be ok. I plan on having a 6' lean to on the North side for implements and firewood.

Morton gave me a bid at 24,200 which I felt was high. This building had all the bells and whistles. Overhangs, gutters, two doors, windows, etc. I do not plan on putting concrete down in this building, just Geotextile Fabric and 8-10" of gravel that I will compact with a compactor.

I do not plan on insulating, or running power to this building either, it will literally just be a free standing barn.

I also had them price out their "cheaper" shed, and it was only 2K less, and had no bells and whistles.

Cleary is going to come out this week and give me a bid.

Finally I am going to look at a DIY setup, and see if my framer would be interested in doing the pole barn as well as the house for a few K more...

What do you think of Morton's bid? Seems high based off what I have read in other threads.

Morton is usually Cadillac in my opinion

Search for Cleary on here enough said.

I had a local Amish company build mine their work was top notch and a lot cheaper than the large company I got a quote from.

even though you aren't running electric stub a couple sweeps up through the floor and out past side wall a foot or 2.
It will on be about $5.00 in material each and you never know I did it by 2 post on opposite sides one got used the other is waiting.

Morton does make a great pole barn but they are usually quite high as far as pricing. You can find another pole barn contractor to build it for alot less. Even the contractor building the house would probably build it. I also think that roughing in for electrical is a good idea. If you ever decide to add electric later, it will be much easier. And I would think at some point, having electricity in the barn would be very beneficial. Good luck to you.

If you don't plan on running electricity to your out building, make sure you plan for enough natural light. I'm sure you'll want to do some work in there at times. You can always add electricity later if you change your mind. You might consider planning your building so you have the option for electricity. One consideration is how far from the house the out building will be. Running cables with high current capacities for much distance gets expensive fast.

Attached is my updated master site drawing. The first shed to go up is the one in the back, away from the house. In order to run electrical out to it, it would be about 375 feet of wire. So I would need some pretty big wire.

I want to get this shed up ASAP becuase all my stuff is outside right now. I will have another outhouse next to the house about 75 feet away that will be trimmed and outfitted like the house, with power, heat, water, plumbing concrete, lift etc.

This one will just be a shed on a gravel pad about 50x50 so I have room around it for firewood, implements, etc.

I plan on running 2 x 2" PVC and 1/2" PEX from the utility room to outside the house foundation in the "general direction" of this shed, so if I ever want to pull power/low voltage/water I have the beginning of the run already under the slab - same thing at the shed side. Would just need to connect the middle later.

Today I piled up about 30 down Xmas trees. I used some skiding tongs attached to a pull harness I wore. I manually drug them across the land each time.

I bought a pair of tongs from TSC for about $29 (about 60% off) 2 weeks ago and they are great! I often wonder what I'd do without them! :D

Good luck of the home building! I'm going to do an owner-builder in about 2 years.

I second the opinion about the Morton bid being high. My father had an Amish crew from ESH put up his 40 X 60 and they did an outstanding job and the price was good. I believe ESH covers most of KS and MO so look them up and get a bid from them. I can post pictures or give you more details if needed. When I build my building, I will be using this company for sure.

Could you run wires and set the barn up for a small generator if running wires is too long a run?
