New Land, New Home Build

Congratulations! I'll be taking notes, as we're about to embark on something similar in the coming year.

You don't want feedback from me -- I'm an engineer with poor art skills. We met with my sister-in-law and her husband yesterday, who are architects that are working up a design and plan for us. I am really awed by how much though and talent goes into home design and layout. I could never do it in a million years. Any house I designed would be a cracker box for sure.

As far as the pocket doors, yes our old house had them and we really like them. The are 2'6" wide, which is ok for bedroom doors.

I didn't examine your plan to see if they'd fit, but I'd consider a 30" door bare minimum. Unless other walls are restricting the size to 30", I'd suggest going to at least 32", preferably 36". The smaller the door, the harder it is get furniture thru it ... and why not go bigger.

I also prefer pocket doors. You don't have to design walls & traffic flow (or furniture placement) to account for the swing radius of hinged doors. They don't look "normal" in some places, but I'd use them where it makes sense & looks right.

All the doors in the home are a minimum 2'6" or 30".

The only "small" doors in the home are in the 2nd and 3rd bedrooms which will be guest rooms once the kids perm rooms in the basement are done. Other 30" doors are for the pantry, linen closet, etc.

Everything else is a minimum 36". I know all about skinny doors, thus the reason we have a 60" entry door from the garage into the mud room for large furniture, etc.

Nice property, nice house plan and nice tractor! Building your own house (whether you're a GC or carpenter) is exciting and really worth doing at least once in your life. I've done it three times in past 15 years and each time is a challenge. Looking forward to more posts.

I did some work on the property today after family time this morning. The weather in KC has been really nice in the upper 40's low 50's.

Today I used the Kubota to move some wood. Our house is going to have a wood burning fireplace. I am trying to wrap my brain around this whole wood/cut/season thing. People say you need a 3 year rotation.

Here is some wood that was on my property. I wanted to get it off the ground so I built a little gravel pad to put it all on. Then I moved it, and stacked it best I could.

I really have no idea what type of wood this is. I assume all wood burns right? :)

If anyone has some threads on how to get started with wood, and how to get the rotation down it would be appreciated.

Enjoy the pics. I still have alot more stacking to do, that other disorganized pile is what I have to do still. Not including all the down stuff everywhere...

Today I piled up about 30 down Xmas trees. I used some skiding tongs attached to a pull harness I wore. I manually drug them across the land each time. I only used the Kubota for a cup holder and for a few large ones I could muscle myself.

I was dripping wet when done, and it saved me a trip to the gym tonight! :D

A few comments on the plans:

- Are you sure you want a door into the M. Bath from the exercise room. I think that will be very awkward.

- I think you need a larger area for coats coming from the Garage. i would make this space much larger to be a Mud Rm.

- Is that an Island in the middle of the Kitchen? If so that might be tight?

- Typically you never see a door into a bedroom or bathroom from a public room in a well designed house. I am slamming you at all... most people don't think about that when planning but when you see it in real life you will understand what I mean. I like the way the doors are hidden into the kids rooms. That is nicely done.

Just my random thoughts...

^ please review my plans I uploaded, not the ones on the website. My red lined plans are much better and address I think all of your concerns.
