I'm pretty new to diesels. Tractor has 18 hours on it. At about 5 hours it started "knocking". The TBN guys suggested Prime Service additive and it hasn't knocked since.

The exhaust pipe is in a laying down position. I notice quite a bit of smoke residue on the FEL supports that are just inches from the exhaust. Tractor smokes for a few seconds when starting, but I don't notice it during operation.

Owners manual says if it smokes, valves need checking. How much smoke is too much?

Sounds completely normal to me.

All diesels "knock". Its the injection/combustion noise you hear. To me, that knock is music to my ears.

I had a 1693TA Caterpillar years ago that sounded like it had a bunch of ball bearings rattling around inside. That sound is power.

The Cetane rating of diesel will increase or decrease the knock. Any fuel additive like Power (sic) Service or Lucas will increase the Cetane rating and reduce the knock as you say.

With a diesel, she'd better knock somewhat or there is something wrong.

As far a residue on your support, Carbon is a by-product of diesel fuel combustion. Live with it or point the pipe another way.

5030 the knock he talks about was a rap. suddenly started. Any how it was an injector hanging up. glad to hear your all set, the black smoke on loader or what ever is normal you can't see it out the exhust but they will blacken any thing the pipe blows on for any amount time. you will see black if you lug or work the engine hard nothing to worry about, just don't lug for long times.

Thanks for your comments. I'm starting to relax and just enjoy the tractor. Had a great day, got to put in 4 hours seat time today.

When I took delivery of my 1914, the dealer had turned the exhaust to pointing straight up and added a flapper. This position keeps the exhaust off of the FEL.
