- 1949 Ford 8n
Hey everyone, first and foremost i would have to say i love the site. It's been a HUGE help on my machine. I'm 15 and have a Ford 8n. We got the tractor about 7 years ago I've finally gotten old enough to start on it. It sat in a garden for 10 or more years before we got it and sat it our garage for the past 6. This summer i realized i can fix it, without the help of my dad, because i am mechanically inclined. First thing I did was buy a starter, i bench tested it and she was dead. During this process I freed up the cylinders with some Marvel Mystery Oil. After that i learned how to jump it from a 12V battery. Just last month i taught myself to changer the points and condenser, replace the plugs and wires. I pulled the manifold and just as i thought, without the exhaust system a mouse nest had developed. I cleaned that and all the ports as best I could and set the manifold aside. She currently sits with no head, not much compression, and no manifold. It hardly has enough compression to move my thumbbb from the spark plug hole. So im gonna pull the valves, clean the gunk from the seats and re-install the valves/head/new gasket. If i dont break 100psi in each cylinder im going to do a full rebuild. So hopefully i get compression soon!
Sorry for the long post, but I have one more question. I brought home a valve spring compression tool from tech class to try to get the valves out but it it was too small
....what size do I need(is this a correct term?) as i will now have to buy one. Any thoughts are apprectiated.
