Thanks jenkspa, I was thinking that it may be better to go smaller for the general yardwork and get a skidsteer or larger for the initial landscaping. The wife says don't buy, rent, but I don't like to be rushed.

What kind of attachments should I consider? I have a small JD mower.

You can buy a small boxblade, rearblade or grader/scraper maintain your drives, other implements such as tillers, rear finish mowers and brush cutters are usually considered on a needs basis. To maintain lawns I use my Deere x749 with several tools including a pine needle rake, landscape rake, boxblade, rearblade, 3pt chipper, drop seeder aerator, broadcast spreader and cart. I am considering a small tiller too. The small garden tractors are good for maintaining a finished lawn area where heavy tractors can damage the turf. These small tractors are also good for close in touchup work between trees and in close quarters.

For building lawn areas initially I use the larger and heavier tractors and tlb which are much better at dirt work and grading. I don't think I would buy this for a one time deal though.

You can buy a small tractor such as the Kioti or any other brand to do your miscellaneous small jobs but all of them are limited when it comes to the larger jobs. You can rent the correct equipment for a fraction of the cost and get better results for the grading and riprap work. Then buy a lawn and garden tractor to maintain everything.
