It has one handle. and one pedal on the left

Rear pto doesn't define it - both had the option of a rear pto.

As you sit on the machine are there 2 handles on the left side engine cover next to the steering wheel or just one? 2 would be the Kohler, 1 would be the onan.

Or open the hood. Kohler will have 1 spark plug lead on top of the engine. The onan will have 2 spark plugs (and spark plug leads), one on each cylinder bank sticking off to the side.

Thank you very much for the info. I have alot to learn about this machine and the attachments. I think I have the "Onan" model because I do not have a rear PTO. Thannks again for your info.

ok i baught a 316 with a old kohler in it im wondering if it would be cheaper to rebuild the kohler or should i put a new motor in it .

The old kohlers are easy to rebuild, and parts are readily avalable and inexpensive - there are several vendors on @-bay that sell rebuild kits reasonable. If you have access to a machine shop that can bore cylinder and do valve job, you can do the assembly straight out of the service manual with simple tools.

My wife wanted to learn about rebuilding motors so she built the Kohler in my 316K as her first project.

Rebuild kit is around $140, and the machine shop work should be in the $150 - 300 range, depending on what you need done and their rate. Plus your labor to do the remove, disassemble, reassemble and install.

I would think buying a new engine would be more than that, and for a less robust engine.

A new engine, especially an ohv design, may be more efficient (hosepower and fuel consumption) than the old side valve design of the kohler. But then you would have to modify mounts, cables, etc to make it fit (onless you buy a turnkey package from someone like Small Engine Warehouse- $$$).

In the end, depends on how much involvement and money you want to to have in this. I, personally like the old kohlers, and like knowing that I "built" it. If it ever gives up(may outlive me.....), I can rebuild it again - these engines were made in a different time and were made to last.

I have a 316, as well as my 2520. The 316 doesn't get used much anymore since the 2520 does all the mowing. It's a nice little tractor and as others have said, it's mostly a 318 with lesser hydraulics. That makes it easier to find parts. I need to get the mowing deck fixed for mine so that I can use it to get some areas the the 2520 is a little big to get.

Good luck with yours.

Hey Greg, I'm kind of in the same boat. I got a 316 with a 33 tiller. By the sounds of it mine is a kohler. My problem is that the pto shaft is nowhere to be found. I need the whole assembly from pto back to pulley. I pulled the fenders off today to get a better idea of what i needed. All I have is about an inch of shaft with a hole. Your help would be greatly appreciated as my local dealer told me that the 33 doesn't fit a 316. It mounted in seconds so I know he's wrong. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Ok folks, called a few more dealers today and found that they dont make the rear pto for a 316 as a kit anymore. I priced it out in pieces and apparently there are 29 parts (bolts included) and its gonna be a measly 7-8 hundred bucks. Anybody know which models of tractor have the same pto as the old 316 with a kohler so i can look for a used one? Im not really in the mood for spending that kind of cash. Thanks
