Yes, the ditch is right next to the road. It is only about an eight foot slope but your idea of spraying it sounds to be the most economical. I've sprayed it in the past but my wife "the BOSS" doesn't much care for the look.

Interesting... why is the parking brake on the 425 & 1430 not able to stop a moving machine? I kinda assumed it could. Guess I better learn its capabilities before finding out the hard way. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Re: new member-long time anonymous-heading to Taze

I spent a lot of time on the 425 vs 1430 struggle and finally decided the 425 is best if your tasks are primarily maintenance and modest improvements... but for major "cosmetic surgery" on large acreage (50+ acres of brush clearing and large scale hauling/moving stuff) you'll want something bigger than the 425. I fall in the latter category and went with the 1430 (delivery expected this coming Tuesday. Wheee!).

That said, I did visit a 425 owner in the area who had cleared about 2 acres of the type land I have and was mightily impressed with his stories of the jobs it handled. Very impressive little machine!

Some locals argue that I need something even bigger than a 1430 (much bigger), but I came down on the side of owning a machine that can handle 95% of everything I need to do *on a regular, recurring basis* and rent specialty machines/services for the remaining tasks. That way I don't waste money (and lots of it) on a machine whos capabilities I only rarely need, yet must live with the added size, inconvenience and expense every day.

On the question of slopes... make sure you leave some margin of safety, cuz if you take a machine on its max-rated slope and a wheel hits an unseen, grass-covered hole... timberrrrrr. (I wonder if slope ratings for PT machines already have such a margin built in?) I fear the rollover. A lot. (received my tiltmeter just the other day) /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'd suggest an alternative solution for the ditch... like establishing some low-growing ground cover to obviate the need for mowing. Or hire a service to just cut it when it gets too shaggy.

Re: new member-long time anonymous-heading to Taze

The 425's parking brake consists of a large pin that locks into slots on the wheel motor. There is one pin on each front wheel motor. They are connected together by a cable that is activated by a lever in front of the operator's left knee. Pull up and the pins will go into the next slot that passes in front of it if the wheel rotates. It will stop a slowly moving tractor. How do I know this? Because my brake handle is loose and it popped on when I bumped it. I heard tick tick tick, STOP and I was stopped. Don't know how it would do with a fast moving run away, though. Don't want to find out, either. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

As Mossroad described the parking brake on the 425 and 1430 is a steel pin that engages a slot in a disk at each front wheel. This design is not intended to brake a moving tractor, it is designed to immobilize a stationary tractor.

To engage the parking brake you have to rotate the wheels slowly until a slot lines up with the spring loaded pin. As the wheel begins to move with any significant speed the pin just floats over the slot without engaging.

Re: new member-long time anonymous-heading to Taze

Thanks for the great explaination. I'm looking in the TSC catalog right now for an anchor to keep on the 1430 /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Jim,
Did you make that trip to Tazewell?
What did you decide regarding a tractor?
