I've got a hair over 10 acres with a pond. Most of my land is hilly and clear. There are a couple of spring fed wet runs on the property in the low spots too. I need to fence in about 3 acres for the dogs and kids and maybe another 3 or 4 so I can get some goats and chickens. We moved out here for the mountain view, lack of neighbors, quietness, and to start raising some of our own food. I might even stock the pond with cat fish. To go along with our hilly land, we have a 1000' paved drive going uphill the whole way with a curve about 1/4 way up. Going downhill, if you miss the curve you'll wind up in the pond, however.
Needless to say, a tractor would be more than useful for us. Specifically, I need a quick way to clear the driveway so I can get out. I'm a firefighter/paramedic with a (now) 2 hour drive to work and snow is not an excuse not to show up. We get a good bit of snow situated between two mountains. My 4x4 Suburban or 4x4 Blazer do OK in the snow, but by far my AWD Volvo wagon with good snow tires goes places the SUV's can't. The Volvo can only push through about 14-16" of snow before it doesn't like moving forward anymore.
With what I want to do to this place, especially brush hogging the one field a few times a year, I'm looking at something with about 30HP at the PTO. My dad has a 4x4 Kubota BX2230 with FEL and underbelly mower and a chipper with a Kubota engine in it. I know they're good machines and I'm partial to Kubota. It just so happens that my nearest dealer is also a Kubota and New Holland dealer. I read a bunch of reviews on here and sought input from people I know as to what brands and sizes to look at. After looking at a few and test driving a few even, I'm leaning strongly towards a 4x4 Kubota L4600 HST with FEL. I think it's a little big for what I want to do, but as I've read over and over on here, so many people wish they would have gone bigger first rather than trading in and moving up. The price isn't bad and the 0% financing is very attractive. I'm selling my other house soon and what I make on it will more than cover the cost of the Kubota too. I just need to convince my wife we need to buy the tractor in March
