I've got a hair over 10 acres with a pond. Most of my land is hilly and clear. There are a couple of spring fed wet runs on the property in the low spots too. I need to fence in about 3 acres for the dogs and kids and maybe another 3 or 4 so I can get some goats and chickens. We moved out here for the mountain view, lack of neighbors, quietness, and to start raising some of our own food. I might even stock the pond with cat fish. To go along with our hilly land, we have a 1000' paved drive going uphill the whole way with a curve about 1/4 way up. Going downhill, if you miss the curve you'll wind up in the pond, however.

Needless to say, a tractor would be more than useful for us. Specifically, I need a quick way to clear the driveway so I can get out. I'm a firefighter/paramedic with a (now) 2 hour drive to work and snow is not an excuse not to show up. We get a good bit of snow situated between two mountains. My 4x4 Suburban or 4x4 Blazer do OK in the snow, but by far my AWD Volvo wagon with good snow tires goes places the SUV's can't. The Volvo can only push through about 14-16" of snow before it doesn't like moving forward anymore.

With what I want to do to this place, especially brush hogging the one field a few times a year, I'm looking at something with about 30HP at the PTO. My dad has a 4x4 Kubota BX2230 with FEL and underbelly mower and a chipper with a Kubota engine in it. I know they're good machines and I'm partial to Kubota. It just so happens that my nearest dealer is also a Kubota and New Holland dealer. I read a bunch of reviews on here and sought input from people I know as to what brands and sizes to look at. After looking at a few and test driving a few even, I'm leaning strongly towards a 4x4 Kubota L4600 HST with FEL. I think it's a little big for what I want to do, but as I've read over and over on here, so many people wish they would have gone bigger first rather than trading in and moving up. The price isn't bad and the 0% financing is very attractive. I'm selling my other house soon and what I make on it will more than cover the cost of the Kubota too. I just need to convince my wife we need to buy the tractor in March :)

Welcome!

With that long of a driveway, and the slope, I sure wouldn't be afraid of getting a tractor with some power to save you some time to get the job done quickly. If you can afford it, it never hurts to go a little bigger.

I have a Deere 5075E, but Kubota makes a great tractor. And with them being your closest dealer, I would strongly consider buying Orange.

Congrats on the new property. Sounds like it's really going to be a blessing to you and your family!

I've been doing some more research tonight on the tractors. The MSRP on the MX5100 is about $300 more than the L4600 with all of the same features. The MX4700 is about $1000 cheaper than the L4600. The tip of the hat goes to the MX4700 for being NA and cheaper but to the MX5700 for a couple more horses and extendable 3 point links. I'm going to stop by the dealer tomorrow and see what real world pricing is on the two. If they really are pretty close to the L4600 in price, I
see no reason not to get the MX series. I'm leaning towards the 4700 at this point for being less money and NA because I already don't think I need that much HP (I was only searching for 30!) and the price difference should be able to score me an extra set of hydraulic hookups or an auger or something.

G'day and welcome to TBN from Downunder.

Enjoy the site. You're right on going bigger than you think you do, especially if you don't have the experience (yet) to judge. I'm not trying to sway you on the 'colour' of your future tractor but, investigate the reputation of the dealership as one of your criteria. Just because they're closest doesn't mean they're the best to support your purchase.

Best of luck, Mate.

It you have your homework. There are many satisfied MX owner's out there. Good choose.

judd,

Given your driveway and your need to get out for work, I would negotiate for filled rear tires and chains for your rear tires into the package.

I regularly make two implement changes per day. Pin adjustable stabilizers and telescoping links on the entire Kubtoa 'Grand L' series and the MX5700 are features I want to have.

My former tractor was a Kubota B3300SU. I added aftermarket pin-adjustable stabilizers from STABILWORKS to replace the factory turnbuckles and it was the best tractor accessory money I spent.

Judd,

My driveway is paved 800+ feet with a mean slope (my 4wd Tacoma has trouble with more than 6 inches of snow). I clear it with a Kubota B2320 and Meteor 51 inch rear blower. If I'm in a hurry I can be gone in 15 minutes. Takes longer to shovel a small parking area.
