Hi, everyone. I've been lurking around here for a while, reading up on the forums, and my account got validated so I figured I'd introduce myself. First off, thanks to everyone here for all the information they provided in various threads; you guys were a big part of my decision to purchase an FX24D Monday from Fredricks Equipment in Hartselle, Alabama.
Some background: My wife and I (and our daughter) are 100% city-folk, but we've been yearning to get out of the suburbs and into the country. We looked for a country home 5 years ago but ended up moving to a smaller and more expensive house in the same suburb. Long story short, we've been planning to move out of the city next year when our daughter gets out of high school, and we found the house of our dreams a couple of months ago. It's a 75-year-old farm house on just under 5 acres right between two small Alabama towns. We close on it tomorrow, and we'll spend the next 6 months getting it the way we want it (paint, floors refinished, etc) before we actually move in. That way we don't have to make our daughter change schools in the middle of her senior year.
While we don't want to turn our land into a farm, per se, we do have a lot of plans for it, including a big garden, fencing off part of it with a privacy fence, fencing in the field for (probably) goats or sheep, and there's a lot of growth that needs clearing. Hence, we needed a tractor.
I spent 6 weeks agonizing over what to get, because I'm pretty clueless about all things mechanical (I'm a computer geek by trade). I'd never even HEARD of a "PTO" before I started looking, if that gives you an idea of how little I know/knew. I visited every dealer around here---J. Deere, AgCo, Massey, Kubota, Kioti, CASE, etc---but ultimately ended up at Fredricks on Monday after reading good things about them (and Yanmars) here.
Here's what I bought:
It'll be delivered tomorrow.
Originally, I was planning to get a rotary cutter, but the current owners of the property had it bush hogged, so I think I can keep it tame with the mower. All the clearing work I need to do will be with the loader and the box blade.
So anyway, hello again, thanks for all the advice (and you didn't even know you were giving to me
), and I'll probably be asking plenty of dumb questions because, like I said, I'm pretty clueless mechanically. For now, anyway.
Here are some pictures. I can't wait to get started on it.
