I would not mess with the fuel solenoid. I would check for a faulty relay or a loose connection before pulling any 'hard parts'..... Use schematic provided earlier to diagnose the issue to verify that it is the culprit first, then once identified pull/replace parts that are inoperable.
Based on your issue, it will run so long as you have the key in the start position?

Maybe I am mistaken? Perhaps a more detailed description of the issue would help us.
The electrical system has an order of event(s) before it is started. All safety switches must be energized in order for the glow plugs to work. This is evident when you switch the key to "run" as well as auxiliary power for your headlights will be energized. When you turn the key to "start" - other systems will energize; which is your fuel solenoid and starter. as the key is released to the run position the relay will hold the fuel solenoid until the key has returned to the "off" position.
