Builder, you have exactly what I wish I had. I wouldn't mind an MX 10 like it either....mower envy...:ashamed::ashamed::ashamed::drool::drool::drool:

Mower envy....I understand. I've been there.
Believe it or not, I actually found a nice MX10, but had to pass on it. Know why? Can't pull it down the road without the possibility of a collision with a car. I guess you could try, but not worth the risk to me.
I think B/H makes a 9' mower. That would have been as big of a fixed mower as I could go.
I really want a single wing folding.

Yeah, maybe, but I'd doubt it. Maybe since I have what amounts to (2) 4' mowers, the blades don't put as much stress on the shaft as one 6' blade. I still can't see why the slip clutch doesn't help. Maybe s/c isn't "fast" enough reacting??

We have a bunch of machinists around here. I could get that shaft fixed for ~$100. My question is would it then balance correctly or would the weld hold long term?

Kinda makes me want to carefully drive any new customer's property with the 4 wheeler a little more carefully before a virgin cut.

With a good welding job the shaft might be better than new, if anything can be done about the brittleness.

I'm sure no expert machinist, welder or metallurgist... but that shaft "looked" pretty weird in the middle!

(Maybe the caramel center was too cool when the chocolate was poured on top!?!)

Kyle - I've heard those observations from a number of different folks regarding the bigger single spindle mowers. That's why I started the "looking" process with the MX-8. The sticker price moved me down to the 7'... I took my measuring tape with me to the dealership and the MX-7 is 10 foot and change from the 3pt to the rear wheel!!!

Man, it's a beast!

I'll keep looking - want to go with the MX-8 - but may have to drop down to the MX-6. 'Course I could also use the 110TLB with the 6' mower, too.

I'd go the extra $$ and get the MX-8.

Mines not a pull type....it's a semi-mount. At first I was hesitant, but now I love it. You get the rigid control of a 3 pt mount, but it floats more than a 3 pt. Most of my mowing wouldn't be as easy with a pull type. "Backing the trailer" isn't my favorite manuever for most of my customers properties, and I'm a CDL driver that backs big trailers all the time!!

I have a MX5 was mowing a feild and the output shaft broke . It was clearly a foulty casting and John Deere Said go pound salt !!!!! I will never buy Deere again !!! And yeah , I can buy a new gear box for $700 and the new pan for $600 !!!! that is the parts update, Can't buy or replace the broken shaft. Thed new gearbox and pan is the 3/4's the price of the new unit. Like I will get right on that Deere,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,NOT

That's some strange grain in that shaft, I seriously doubt it was a casted part. I've seen shaft up to 8" snapped off and not have that odd grain in the break. Doesn't appear to have had any previous cracks in it or you be able to see old cracks, they usually always shine, as in oil penetration or rust, like a sore thumb. Was it rotating when it broke, it looks almost like a sideway break and not a twisting motion break.

hi i was reading the articles on this forum concerning the mx6. i was wondering why none of you considered the WOODS line of rotary mowers? i have 2 a 6' and 7' the 6is medium duty the 7'is heavy duty ,both 3pth ,i use a 3/8 log chain for the top links, and i can personally say they are well built units.im ashamed of the way ive beat these machines, mowing my farm and custom rite o way work here n southwestern pa. its tough on a tractor and a brush hog. there are a few john deere mowers around my area, and a few bush hog brands ,i dont recall any one saying anything about ever breaking a shaft like the one pictured. i personally have cut a peice of 4" pipe caseing off and i will and do mow 3-4"trees off, with no problems with any shaft breakage, i can say i have broken blades on both machines more on the 7 then the 6, always in the pin holes.i dont agree with the comment to stay away from the 7' i have used them for years and have no problems with the shafts.but regardless brush hogging is hard on a tractor from the mower up thru the drive train it ll takes a beating, but i trust the woods brand and i like them for my work. just my .02 cents

Try to remember the MX mowers are "medium duty" mowers. I think they're safe in up to 2" material. I've hit plenty of branches, rocks, etc. with no issues *yet*.
If you want to mow rocks & stumps, you'd step up to the HX series, which is a heavier-duty Deere mower.
Right before I bought my MX-8, I turned down an HX-10 and a Rhino 3008. Glad I did because of roadability issues on the HX-10. I think the BH may have been heavier built, but I had to travel 400 miles round trip to get it and it wasn't in nearly as nice of condition.

My gut feeling is that a Rhino, Bush Hog or Deere are probably close in toughness, but the Deere looks like it'll look better longer. The only reason I got the Deere is because it was such a good deal and a local seller....hope I'm still saying that 5-10 years from now.
