I use a 12" for stumps and drain pipe and 18" for foundations and septic drain fields.

I've never taken the bucket off my bh. How long does it take to swap them out. I think you can go as small a 9". That would be great for ripping up roots.

You have made me think...and maybe someone has thought of this and makes it, but why don't they make a root ripper. I invision it being like a somewhat rounded hollow tooth, serrated edges on both sides and a pont on the end of the tooth. You could remove small amounts of dirt around the stump and rip right through the roots. I could draw one, but maybe I should apply for patent first. What do you think? Ever heard or seen such a thing?

I don't recall ever seeing one. Maybe it could even be something that just attaches to your bucket when you need it.

There are single tooth buckets made for ripping roots, They aren't very common, but there are a few mfg that make them. I never bought one simply for the price they get especially when that price almost equals a new 24" bucket.. It would have to be a quick attach for my set up, and this adds a bit more, so for me, the amount of use moving roots and the costs, I would neve recover those costs, this is to include the little time savings a single ripper tooth can offer,

I use both 12" and 24" buckets on my Woods 1050. The 24 is good for general digging and the 12 is good for root ripping and rock pulling. A 9" bucket is too narrow for most uses unless you have a specialized need as you'll typically spend a lot of time trying to get material out of the bucket. It take me 15 to 30 minutes to change a bucket depending on my mood. LarryRB has a bucket QuickAttach and it only takes him about a minute or two to change a bucket.

I notice that the standard 18 inch is a 4 tooth which would leave about 3 inches between the teeth and the one im thinking of getting is the 16 inch heavy duty with 3 teeth and about 5 inches between teeth so how do you think this would effect digging? Is more teeth better? for rocks and roots is less teeth better? I want to try to get away with just one bucket for all my needs and i will be doing stumps and rocks and also ditching. Not much big hole or foundation digging.

Personally I don't think you'll notice that much difference between 3 or 4 teeth. Given a choice, I'd probably go for less, stronger teeth as I've ripped a few teeth off of buckets when tring to pry out rocks.
