new oil fomulations

Anyone been reading about/ keeping up with the new formulation make up of the new diesels oils for 2007 & beyond diesel engines ? Seems that the old adds will clog particulate filters. From what I have read, TBN # will drop as a result of these new formulations.

There are numerous good articles available online about the new API CJ-4 oils. Yes, TBN numbers will be lower but since the oil will produce less soot and contaminates in the combustion process the higher TBN will not be as critical as in older oils. The new CJ-4 oil will be more robust than any previous diesel spec oil and has had more research put into it than any previous spec oil. Oil companies have been pulling their hair out for a long time now getting ready for this new oil and it shouldn't disappoint.

The online magazine is a pain to read and might take a while to load depending on your internet connectin speed but it's worth waiting for it to load and read it.

Don't know if I want to invest in one of these new EPA diesels until all the bugs are worked out .I bet there will be plenty of bugs

Well there shouldn't be to many bug's next year. The only major change is the addition of the particulate filter. Diesel's have been using EGR valves for a couple of years now and alot of the changes are just in programing. Even the filters shouldn't be to big a problem as other countries have been using them for years so most of the bug's are already worked out. The USA is just slow to catch on to emissions systems.

Hmmmmm - I wonder how much junk an airliner puts out? I think they should be cleaned up. But, alas, that might effect the rich, influential, and powerful.

Sometime go to a major airport and watch the pollution coming from the airliners. It really is bad.

The jet folks tell me the newer jet engines are very very clean burning. Now my BBQ grill, that thing is another story .

Very true... If we can just get used to the "dont let it idle excessively" rule, we wont have many problems with them..Good fuel helps too, an aproved cetane booster will help dramaticly reduce build up as well..

Some markets are getting better at the "don't let it idle excessively". About 2 or 3 years ago I went to a state of Maryland emissions control convention that was directed to school bus contractors. It was mainly on the introduction of particulate filters next year, their cost and maintenance procedures. In addition they had a long portion devoted to new law's passed in Maryland about idiling. In Maryland it is now "illegal" to let a school bus idle for more than 5 minutes at any school, school function or when children are on the bus unless there is a "good" reason. Good reasons are for heat in the winter or if parked on the side of the road. But basically if it's at the school it should be turned off unless the heaters are needed. They had all kinds of studies that had been donw about children with asthma (sp?) and that some of it may be due to the high concentration of particulate matter in the air around schools from fleets of idiling diesel engines.

Over the road trucking is another market that is finally getting the hint. Most people just don't realize how harmfull letting a diesel engine idle for extended periods of time is. A excellent example is when I worked at a International truck dealership a few years ago. The Cummins ISX 600HP engine had just come out a couple of month's prior and I had a guy bring in his truck with a complaint of high oil consumption. Checked over about everything that I could and could not find a problem. While viewing the ECMs history I noticed that the engine had about as much idle time as it did road speed time. I talked with the driver and found out that he would drive the truck most of the day and park at truck stops at night and let it idle for heat and a/c and to keep the batteries charged. I should mention that the truck already had 60k miles on it already. What I finally figured out was happening was that the driver would drive the truck during the day and the engine would start to break in. Park at night at a truck stop and let it idle all night and the cylinder wall's were being washed down. I told the owner of the truck what I figured was going on and we came to the aggrement to install a APU unit. A small a/c heater and generator system that mounts under the truck and allows the engine to be turned off at night. They came back two weeks later and told me that the oil consumption had gone from 1.5 gallons a day to 0 in that two week period. After over 6 months and 60k miles the poor engine finally broke in.

Another great thing that is starting to pop up at truck stops around my area are what I call driver comfort zone truck stops. You pull in your rig for the night and shut it off. The truck stop provides landline electricity, cable and in one of the windows a a/c and heating duct is placed. The actual cost of the service is less than what it would cost to keep the truck idling all night. Cut's down on pollution, cuts down on noise so the driver can get a better night's sleep and can extend engine life by as much as 2X since it slashes operating time over the life of the truck. A great service that I suggest all truck drivers to use.

So the trucking industry is getting better as a whole with the excessive idiling problem. It's just one of those problems that will take time to get everyone on the same sheet of music.
