The wife and I purchased a piece of property last year that we hope to build our dream home on. The property was an old farm with all kinds of trash old falling and pushed over buildings etc..the house that was standing actually started out as a masonry block garage. At some point (we think in 1970,found a date in the slab) it was converted into a house, added on to and aluminum sided. This horror sat empty for a number of years and should have appeared in the horders tv show. Fast forward , we gutted it down to the cmu inside, tore out all the floors, VCt and carpet. Walls ceilings etc. power washed the ceiling joists rafters .... Tore off the roofing , repaired and replaced roof deck.... Installed new man doors and new OH door. You get the picture. This years project is to remove all the windows and replace and paint inside and out.

So here goes my question... The place has a funky smell... And I cannot pin it down. A part of me thinks that it is the asphaltic mastic that is on parts of the floor (looks like its thick in many areas and may have been used the level the floor)

The entire structure was grown in to the point you could barely walk around it before we brushed around it and cleaned up the landscape. At that time the woods or bushes , crap outside also had the same funky smell, it has since dissipated but not entirely .

My plan is to rent a floor grinder ( it's about 900sq ft. ) do my best and then either paint the floor or use a concrete sealer like Euclid chemical diamond seal (don't really want to spend a crap load of money on an epoxy floor) p.s anyone ever ground a concrete floor ? Any tips ? Not looking for a glass smooth perfect floor, just want to remove the areas where there is leveling crap on it.

I asked a friend of mine what did he make of the funky smell ... He said its just damp...as its an unheated space.... I don't really agree...

Does anyone have any thoughts on this ? There is no evidence of mold or mildew that I can see. And there are gable vents. Could it be the fireplace ? Any thoughts on getting rid of the Oder? My dad says once you paint it all will be ok...

The only thing that I can think of doing is renting one of those fog machines that are used to kill mold, mildew. They supposedly also have some sort of protection and Oder control...

Concrobium Mold Control

Not even sure I need it. Sorry for the long winded explanation , any thoughts are appreciated ...

Ps the old horse barn that is far away and has no roof has a similar funky Oder ... What can it be ? Is this mildew? It doesn't smell like when I let our canvas tent get mildew in it .... I was thinking about stripping the t&g siding from the horse barn, soda blading it, sealing it and using it inside the new house ... But I'm worried about what the **** this strange to me Oder is ...

Near Cleveland, no drilling around that I know of, the area is primarily large tracts of residential . Older and newer homes on anywhere from a few acres and up.

Maybe it is just age, "eau de codger" Old buildings do take on a smell.

My approach would be to put a good sealer on the concrete block walls and before painting, see if that cuts the funky odor. The Zinsser products are good as far as I know, haven't used any in several years.

RustOleum.com

Any chance they used the building to stable a horse after the barn roof failed?

Could you pressure wash the interior walls or at least wash them down with a good bleach and water solution? Then apply a sealer such as Zinsser BULLS EYE 1-2-3® PLUS PRIMER then a coat of paint? That would take care of the walls at least. Just a thought.

That's the plan for the walls. Not sure what to do about the wood joists and roof deck, I was thinking about leaving them open ...
